An executive writes to Chairman Smoot urging that the country not be asked to fund others who can aid themselves. The letter warns that direct or indirect loans would prolong distress and calls for independent action.
The Senate finance committee approved the veterans loan measure 13 to 8 despite President Hoover's opposition. The panel rejected a substitute offering $150 cash payments and sent the bill to the full Senate with expectations of quick action.
The mother and three children are ill and confined at home. No fire caused the situation. fuel was provided to keep them warm. They request additional firewood groceries and clothing. Officers and Friendship Fire Company members will deliver contributions left at the engine house.
Judge Philip Williams in Corporation Court dismissed the reckless driving case against Elizabeth Tanquary after an appeal from Police Court. At Chestertown Maryland on February 18 police reported ten deaths from punch laced with poison alcohol. Victims, all men and including a woman, were stricken blind and suffered violent paroxysms. Coroner Dodd sent viscera to Baltimore for analysis and postponed further inquests pending results. Police from Baltimore assisted in the probe.

A Virginia judge approves Page Power Company authority to build a bed rock dam and hydro electric development on the Shenandoah River near Overall in Page County. The plan includes a 600 elevation reservoir spanning about 360 acres with 3600 acre feet stored water and a four mile pond.
Washington reports the Senate conferees and a House majority signed a compromise to operate the $150 million Muscle Shoals power and nitrate plants. The plan calls for government operation of the power plant, leasing the nitrate plant for fertilizer production, and government construction of transmission lines from Wilson Dam.
Mrs John C Lee and her daughter Miss Elizabeth Lee of Sunny Brook Farm Milldale Warren county Va are in New Orleans for the Mardi Gras celebration. They are joined by Mrs Clifford Barbee of California formerly Miss Julia Lee of Guilford Clarke county.
The government bureau of agriculture economics committee reported 7 446 000 barrels of apples in storage 23 percent more than a year ago and 14 percent above the monthly average In addition there were 15 350 000 boxes 50 percent more than last year and 4 476 000 bushel basketsful about 70 percent above the usual quantity
In eastern Turkey near Malatya seven peasants were buried alive in a small mountain avalanche yesterday. Rescuers located and recovered the bodies.

James Wentz and Benjamin Hausman both about 16 years old styled themselves as travelers from Little Baltimore. Police found they had run away from home and detained them on vagrancy charges before sending them back to Baltimore with assurances they would return to their relatives. The boys provided Baltimore addresses and stated their wish to continue westward toward Nebraska, but were returned after confirmation of their status.
Harry Lukie charged with holding up the Commercial Hotel and stealing $49 from the night clerk. William Johnson indicted for assault with intent to kill Hollie Jasper, both alleged to be of the same race. Trial date not yet set by Judge Philip Williams.

36 were killed and 172 injured in a train wreck near Linyang on the Peiping Hankow line. Heavy snowfall crippled rail and wire communication, delaying the report reaching Hankow.
In Buffalo New York two men aged 87 and 22 were killed and six people held as witnesses after a dispute sparked by children throwing snowballs. The fight between the Lachine and Cala families escalated to gunfire and knives, with Mrs Maria Cala central to the initial dispute.

Camillus G. Baker, a renowned Cross Junction area farmer in Frederick County, was admitted to Memorial Hospital with both arms fractured after a ladder fall in his barn. One fracture is near the wrist and the other between the wrist and elbow. He was about 70 years old and endured severe pain until medical relief was given.

Word was received of the death of Eugene Walker at his Connellsville home Pennsylvania February 17. He was a son of the late James and Laura Walker of this city. Funeral arrangements not completed. body to be brought to Winchester for interment. Survived by widow Rebecca Walker and sons Eugene Walker Jr Elizabeth Walker Henrietta Walker William Howard Madison Walker and stepson Lewis Robinson.
The Winchester laboratory opened by the State Department of Agriculture will close March 1. After that date, apple samples for spray residue must be sent to the state headquarters in Richmond. The facility has aided growers and shippers by processing thousands of samples since last fall.

Albert Courchene a 35 year old city plumbing inspector was killed by machine gun fire while directing work on a south side building. A sedan fired multiple shots striking him in the chest abdomen and legs. Police say the killing appears linked to the August murders of plumbers union agents Charles Mulcahy and Matthew Rueberry at a city high school.
