A snow bound night rescue ends in one crew saved when the tugboat Fens’ is crippled. Trewin bound for Baltimore could not reach due to blinding snow as the tug sent an SOS.
Bulletin reports the Italian motorship Feltre sank to its promenade deck and the American freighter Edward Luckenbach grounded on Cottonwood Island after a Columbia River collision in a gale. Both ships’ crews totaled about 64. no passengers aboard. All hands saved.

Circuit Judge Paul V. Gadola said auto strike leaders must appear in person to purge contempt for violating a General Motors injunction. He named officers of the United Auto Workers and local units involved in sit-downs at Fisher Body plants and a Chevrolet department in Flint. Writs of attachment were issued February 4, but a February 11 Detroit negotiations settlement led to a peaceful withdrawal of strikers. GM agreed to dismiss some injunction actions contingent on the court's will.

At a special meeting the City Council approved a 1937 license ordinance with new licenses for abattoirs, old gold buyers, public accountants, civil engineers and surveyors. Laundries pay 50 dollars. book agents and salesmen 200 dollar bonds. cleaners and dyers cover clothes service. coal and other dealers face 10 dollar licenses and city weight checks. The council also authorized codification by the League of Virginia Municipalities and invited the Chamber of Commerce banquet at George Washington Hotel tomorrow night.
In Somerset Pennsylvania on February 17 a physician testified he saw Frank C. Monaghan nude and unconscious minutes before the Uniontown innkeeper died in Fayette county. The matter involves five professionals charged with concealing true facts about the 64 year old man’s death during a murder trial of Uniontown officers. Coroner Baltz and Dr Corrado were among those present. Baltz declared Monaghan dead after listening to his heart while other officials left and ambulance was summoned.
A two ounce canary named Pete surprised a Washington crowd with a rendition of Yankee Doodle. Owner Mrs. E M Jameson staged a home command performance with Pete under scrutiny by observers and Pete showed nerves rather than song.
In a dramatic court battle the sisters of Notre Dame de Lion in Kansas City Mo were granted custody of Sheila Ann Tomlinson and her sibling, four, pending a hearing after divorce awarded to D. W. Tomlinson. Mrs Virginia S. Tomlinson was denied temporary custody.
Harry R. Bryant former resident of this city died suddenly yesterday in his car near Lee’s Cross Roads close to Shippensburg Pennsylvania. He had been in delicate health for years after serving with the American Expeditionary Force and was alone in the vehicle when the heart attack occurred. He had long been treated for a heart ailment at a veterans hospital in New York state. He belonged to a prominent Winchester family with ties to Joseph and Mary Snapp. Continued on Page 9 Cel 7.
Funeral services for J W Ramey set for Thursday 1 30 p m from Fairmont Avenue home with the Rev E T Clarke and later in Charles Town at the Presbyterian Church. Pallbearers include Benjamin Ramey Arthur Ramey Clarence Ramey William Trussell Webster Ramey and French Ramey with honorary pallbearers Frank Downey Jr and William Downey of Martinsburg.

Senators Wheeler and Bone unveiled a Madison pattern amendment allowing Congress to re-enact by a two thirds vote any law struck down by the Supreme Court. Action to be taken only after a new Congress is elected. Wheeler urged rapid ratification by state conventions.
Harry Bosman, 39, convicted bootlegger, was kept in the Norfolk jail to prevent a repeat suicide attempt after his arrest for the murder of Katherine Elizabeth Ewell and serious wounding of Clara Tucker. He admitted killing Ewell and claimed Tucker’s wound was accidental. he later said he would die. He attempted hanging in custody but was saved.
Officers of the Friendship Fire Company announce a square dance at Frank Patton's Dance Hall on Monday night February 22 Washingtons Birthday. This is the second event this season and proceeds go to the company truck fund.
Ten men were believed killed when steel and wood forms crashed from the Golden Gate Bridge during removal work. The collapse sent workers 200 feet into the water as the net failed to hold. Eight bodies were thought to be swept to sea and two men were picked up by Coast Guard.

Miss Nancy Hoyle assistant supervisor of school libraries state department of education Richmond will be in Winchester this weekend. On Friday she will visit county schools with Miss Annie Starling to assist with school libraries. On Saturday she will meet teachers at 10 a m in the conference room at the Courthouse to discuss filing of materials. Hoyle's visit should prove helpful to all teachers.

On opening day of the hearing officer, C S Lowery testified the defendant was sober after the crash. Other witnesses largely corroborated the account given from the stand. The officer reported seeing Frederick Affleck struck by the automobile at the scene.
Stewart Elting testified that Thomas G. Scully, allegedly intoxicated, arrived at 11:45 PM on Christmas to keep a prior engagement with his sister and offered a drink, which Elting refused. The trial encompassing the deaths of Frederick M. Affleck and Dewey Newlin proceeded with witnesses describing high speeds and lack of horn or braking as the Scully car struck pedestrians and vehicles near Winchester.
