On June 21, 1813 British land and sea attacks against Craney Island were repulsed with no American casualties. Lt. Col. Henry Beatty led Frederick County forces while Maj. James Faulkner directed 2-24 and 4-6 pounders to break the British infantry and marine column and support seaward defenses. The engagement sunk 4 or 5 British barges and captured Admiral Warren's barge. estimated British losses were at least 200 men. The action is noted as the major Virginia event of the War of 1812.

Navy sailor Charles Streit of Winchester pleaded guilty to feloniously shooting at a dwelling last Dec 30. He received a 12 month suspended jail sentence, $100 fine, and two years probation. Streit’s associate, Orville Kiger, had priorly received a similar sentence. Police said two shots hit a sign in front of S C Whet tel Station on Rt 11 during a dispute in a car, narrowly missing the building and occupants.
Winchester Patrolman Stotler and Berryville sergeant Ralph W. Pope are among 120000 former POWs eligible for $1 per day under the War Claims Commission. Stotler, captured May 6 1942 at Corregidor, will get about $1 per day for time in camp, while Pope’s payment will exceed $1000. Claims must be in by March 31 and checks are due to start going out next week.

Former Three Power Security Board secretary Joan Cecile von Goetz is sent back to the United States under guard. She reportedly entered the Russian sector in Germany after her military stay permit expired and could not be renewed, according to authorities.
Washington diplomats say Russia aims to establish three spheres of Communist influence in Asia south of Siberia. The first sphere includes Manchuria Inner Mongolia Outer Mongolia and Sinkiang. The second sphere is China under Communist rule and the third Southeast AsiaIndochina Burma Siam and Malaya. The plan would create a buffer between the Soviet Union and southern Asian lands and shift Chinese energies southward.
George Simmons Harris, chairman of Dan River Mills and founder of the Cotton Textile Institute, died in a Danville hospital at age 69 from pneumonia and complications. He was a Georgia native and longtime leader in the cotton industry, serving as the American Cotton Manufacturers Assn president in 1927 and 28.
