Guerrillas stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran wounding two Marines and taking 102 hostages including Ambassador Sullivan. A 34 hour gun battle ended with rival Khomeini loyalists rescuing the Americans and securing the compound.
Sgt. Ken Kraus recounts the 1979 assault on the American Embassy in Tehran as guerrillas attacked, took guards hostage, and wounded him with a bullet fragment. He, other Marines, and American staff barricaded doors, while Ambassador Sullivan ordered surrender unless life threatened. Kraus was treated at Amir Alam Hospital for a forehead injury.
President Carter flies to Mexico City to press for a broadened U S Mexico partnership on oil trade and immigration as Mexican officials push for greater leverage. Demonstrations greet the visit while U S officials discuss a tentative natural gas deal and tensions persist over migrants and prices.
Richmond AP reports Tuesday's Virginia General Assembly action includes Senate approval of a House bill allowing optometrists to use certain eyedrops on customers. Gov Dalton may clash with this mild measure as he vetoed a similar lunch period bill and the panel weighs a $3.3 million annual cost. A House committee also approved ending the two year certification requirement for barbers and hairdressers to be free of communicable diseases.
U S ambassador Adolph Dubs was kidnapped from his car in Kabul and killed during a police assault on the Kabul Hotel. The attackers demanded the release of three Shiite mullahs as negotiations failed and the Afghan government refused to bow to demands.
U S officials avoided a crisis decision on military intervention after Iran freed embassy personnel following an assault by an armed group. Marines remained in the Azores as Tehran warned to curb Americans in the streets while communications hindered early reporting.
