John C. Underwood, once a Clarke County resident, joined the Union army to serve as U S district judge in Virginia and led a grand jury that indicted Jefferson Davis for treason. He chaired the convention that drafted the Underwood Constitution disfranchising a large white majority. His Clarke records begin May 13, 1849 with a land trust deed, and the tract was finally sold in 1881.

A three car crash at 5 30 p m on Berryville Ave caused about 650 dollars in property damage with no injuries. Vehicles involved included a 1919 Ford driven by Wesley Crisman of 118 West Monmouth St a 1947 Kaiser driven by Raymond Lee of Stephenson and a 1942 Chevrolet coupe owned by D S Anderson and driven by Annie Mae Anderson of Radford Virginia. A Baltimore and Ohio diesel engine was pressed into service at Winchester yesterday replacing two coal burning locomotives. Shortage of coal due to a strike prompted the changeover, with freight agent E. E. Bowers saying the diesel is doing a good job. It operates three eight hour shifts in the yard runs Winchester to Strasburg and return and Winchester to Millville.
