Utica Family Perishes in Cedar Street Fire
A devastating flash fire in a two story cedar street frame house in Utica New York on February 13 killed eight members of a single family and injured several others. Victims include Mrs Ruth Hoage and Mrs Shirley Hoage along with nine children aged from five months to nineteen years. Firefighters recovered bodies from the smoking ruins as the building collapsed trapping sleepers and forcing a harrowing rescue effort. Surviving relatives were among fourteen scantily clad persons rescued from the blaze.

Half of County Farmland Signed for Soil Conservation Plan
A total of 546 farmers representing about 50 percent of Frederick county farm land have signed requests to participate in the 1948 soil conservation practices program. Opequon district leads with 144 signups, followed by Stonewall district with 137, Shawne 100, Gainesboro 90, and Back Creek 65. signups close March 1. Last year 750 farmers participated. ACA’s 1948 funding is 36,597 dollars, about half of 1947.
