A court mandates desegregation for Norfolk schools amid a harsh January with deep snowfalls and extended subfreezing weather. Temperatures dipped for six straight days, with records of 8 below in Berryville and 1 below at Winchester lab, while heavy snowfall disrupted local districts.
U S District Judge Walter E Hoffman ordered the Norfolk School Board to desegregate by August 15 and held Newport News to a similar deadline. He urged a plan showing compliance with the Supreme Court decree, noting state lawmakers had reversed progress and urging constructive action from the General Assembly.
The Rouss Fire Company held its 60th annual banquet at the War Memorial Building with 260 attendees including local officials and guests. Rev. Ernest K. He warns American policy should not be chained to the United Nations and questions its value versus risk.
The hungry gray and white cat Tabby or Tom perched atop a 60 foot utility pole in Simpson for nine days triggering public curiosity and power concerns. After spectators left food and PP&L prepared a rescue using a long pole and fish, the cat leaped to safety from near a 23,000 volt line. The pole perch disrupted power to Farview State Hospital and three towns, prompting a careful rescue plan.
Moscow's foreign minister Dmitri Shepilov advances a six point proposal to the United States Britain and France. The plan calls for peace by negotiation noninterference in internal affairs withdrawal of foreign bases and arms from Near and Middle East and economic cooperation. White House denounces it as an attempt to undercut Eisenhower anti communist policy and urges full Arab-Israeli withdrawal and compensation.
Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce says Harpers Ferry National Monument will generate about $500000 in annual tourism by 1966. Last year 115000 visitors. National Park Service plans $225000 spend over three years ending June 30. Twenty nine workers tearing down and repairing structures and installing signs. Local communities urged to prepare for increased demand for food lodging and fuel.

Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services panels rejected a watered down substitute for Eisenhower Middle East policy. The 16 9 count reflected substantial opposition with leaders predicting Senate approval later. The House approved plan would authorize U S military action against overt Communist aggression in the Middle East.
President Eisenhower abandons quail hunting for golf at Glen Arven Country Club in Thomasville partnering with pro John Walter against James Hagerty and George Allen. The stay with Humphrey continues after a quail outing producing 10 birds for Ike and seven for Humphrey on the first day and 18 more the next day. Temperature reads 45 degrees in bright sun.
