Wholesale prices edged up five tenths of a percent in January led by farm products textiles and machinery though weather disruptions have yet to fully show in the index. Energy prices lagged and the general index stood at 188.0 with a 4.9 percent year over year rise.
Indianapolis a gunman Anthony G. Kiritsis held hostage Richard Hall for 63 hours claiming he could walk free by releasing the executive unharmed. Police captured Kiritsis after he said the arrest was “a cheap shot” as Hall was freed from a third story apartment he had tricked officers into believing was booby trapped.
Unseasonably warm weather in the East and Midwest brings springlike scenes in cities such as Atlanta New York and Chicago while northern Illinois reports serious flooding from melting snow. Ohio and neighboring states plan flood responses with governors and agencies coordinating on river ice and evacuation strategies.
The Virginia House of Delegates passed a 93 to 0 appropriations bill to bridge a $102.6 million revenue shortfall without funding state employee pay raises. The measure reallocated funds, delayed payroll increases, and avoided broader tax hikes while preserving local aid and jobs.
