The local Red Cross executive committee held a session amid reports of helping ten unfortunates and many children staying in school. January logged 257 cases including ex servicemen and civilians with substantial aid requests and alimony collections.
The American Tobacco Company lowered wholesale prices for its leading brand to 5.50 per thousand from 6. The cut takes effect immediately, and retail circles report a nationwide grocery chain cutting prices to 10 cents per package and 1 dollar per carton in many stores.
Senate raises army appropriations by nearly 500 000 for Revenue Officers Training Corps camps pushing total to 3 840 000 and backs a 500 000 increase for army clothing. It also removes an offsetting retirement pay restriction and critics say the bill exceeds 1933 levels by about 800 000.

She died yesterday at Blue Ridge Sanatorium near Charlottesville after seven months as a patient. She is survived by husband and son Lawrence K Luttrell, father Newton Unger near Stephens City, brother Delmar Unger, sister Mrs Foster Ashley of Lanod Md, half-brother Loring Clowser, half-sister Lola V Clowser Hayfield.

Ernest Wisecarver aged 53 longtime manager on the Middle road farm of Dr P W Boyd died at home after months of illness. He native of Frederick county had lived all his life there and is survived by widow Ethel and three children Wilmer Ernest and Ralston Lee. Funeral set for Monday with services at Kernstown Methodist Church led by Rev Russell Hardesty. interment Mount Hebron Cemetery.
Senate appropriations committee increased the Federal Trade Commission budget from 500000 to 780000 for the next fiscal year to continue its power utilities investigation. The panel reported favorably the billion dollar independent officers supply bill funding the Trade Commission, veterans bureau, Farm Board, ICC and other agencies.
New York reports that Boston heavyweight Ernie Schaaf was knocked out by Primo Carnera in the thirteenth round. He is diagnosed with intracranial hemorrhage and remains not in immediate danger but requires absolute rest. officials note possible slight concussion and a skull X-ray study is pending.

Rescue workers dug through debris in Neunkirchen Saar after a massive gas tank blast at the iron works. Authorities report 61 dead and 100 to 200 injured with widespread damage and a burning car trapped in the debris field.
John D. Ryan, chairman of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company, died today in New York of heart disease after a short illness. Born in Michigan in 1864, he rose to prominence in the copper industry and held directorships in several major firms. He served as second assistant secretary of war and director of the air service during World War I.
Winchester Lodge of Elks will attend regular services at Christ Episcopal Church at 5 o clock tomorrow evening. The Rev. Robert B. Nelson rector and lodge chaplain will preach a special sermon for the Elks. A Boys and Girls Glee Club program from Handley High School will be featured. Everyone is invited.
New York Feb 11 The stock market shows a modest gain as short covering lifts recently weak tobacco issues. Several issues close fractions to more than a point higher as about 350000 shares change hands in a cautious weekend session.
Mrs. Helen R. Leidy widow of Dr. Joseph Leidy renowned Philadelphia physician died at Chestnut Hill Hospital at 62 after pleuro-pneumonia complications from a hotel window incident. She led the Philadelphia Grand Opera Company and aided French and Chinese relief efforts. her husband died July 7. Survivors include son Carter Randolph Leidy and several siblings.
At Batavia Java Captain Eikebroom was relieved of command of the Dutch cruiser De Zeven Provincien after a mutinous crew seized control and the vessel was retaken following air attacks and a long pursuit. A naval inquiry opened as 22 sailors were reported killed and mutiny leader Tuhumana identified.
A Japanese navy spokesman in Tokyo comments on Washington’s advice that the U S Atlantic fleet will stay in the Pacific. He says economy is the reason and the decision is not tied to the international situation, noting public reaction remains to be seen amid tensions.

Local competitors cited and the event aims for an annual spelling bee to aid unemployed relief.
Mrs Pilcher wife of P P Pilcher received word that her niece Janie Barnes and her husband Ales Barnes of Jacksonville Florida were fatally injured Monday in an automobile accident near Jacksonville. The Barnes were children of the late Guy Barnes of North Carolina. No details of the crash were given in the message.
