US nuclear reactor in space to stay aloft for 4000 years
The United States keeps one uranium-235 reactor in space aboard the Snapshot satellite launched in 1965. It remains in a 700 mile orbit and is expected to burn out upon re entry after about 4,000 years, posing no danger. Smaller plutonium-238 generators have had isolated incidents but caused no radiation leakage.
