Wholesale declines spark retail cuts as chains lower flour by 4 cents per 10 pound bag and lard by 4 cents per pound. The drop follows a broad fall in grains and other staples on major exchanges, with wheat and corn tumbling about 60 cents a bushel since January highs.
The Nook in Berryville traces to Major Charles Smith who came from Prince William County and fought at Great Meadows and Fort Duquesne. He named his 800 acre estate Battletown and built the clapboard house on Main Street, later sold to Dr. John Tomson. His descendant John Smith II sold parts of Battletown, helping form Berryville.
Jack Henshall an 18 year old Life scout of Troop 9 leads a two hour handover as Winchester city offices change hands to 15 scouts during National Boy Scout Week. City posts include city manager Beverly Braithwaite and city auditor Skipper Lamb with other youths filling treasurer sergeant sanitary inspector and more under civic watch. The event featured mayor C R Anderson and observed by city officials. Henshall plans to attend college.
Mrs. Ida Fisher Lycett, 51, died 6:40 pm yesterday at Winchester Memorial Hospital after years as a secretary at Hansborough and Carter Co. She was born in Winchester, daughter of Frances O. Caraway and Mortimore W. Fisher. Survived by brother W. Lee Fisher, sister Mrs. Charles S. Fling, and four nephews. Services Monday at Omps Funeral Home with Rev. T. J Hawkins officiating. burial in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
An overflow crowd at Brad dock Street Methodist heard Dr Walter C Gum of Centenary Methodist Church Richmond deliver the sixth closing sermon of the Winchester Ministerial Association week of prayer. He urged belief in a personal ethical God and noted history tests convictions more than actions. Attendance exceeded 2000 as Hudson Taylor and others were cited and faith and fellowship were praised by Rev Robert Whitten.
Dublin reports Eamon de Valera aims to stay premier after Fianna Fail wins 66 of 147 seats in the Dail. Opposition holds 76 with 5 seats pending in Carlow Kilkenny. Dail meets Feb 18 to elect a prime minister. De Valera, 65, could seek support from independents and National Labour.

Gen Omar N. Bradley took over as the Army chief of staff from Gen Dwight D. Eisenhower at the Pentagon. President Truman attended the noon change of command as Eisenhower, 57, leaves after 33 years of service to become Columbia University president in June.
The Ap ple Blossom Festival firemen torchlight parade on April 29 will award 872.50 in prizes across 11 classes with a separate trophy for best appearing majorettes. Eligible groups must have at least five people and prizes include top awards for fire companies, pumpers, ladders, bands, drum and bugle corps, auxiliaries and more. A meeting of the parade committee is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday at Reuss fire hall.
Reginald Ogden of Strasburg stands charged with bludgeoning and robbing Charles Platt, Silk Mill operator. The case went to a 12 man jury in Shenandoah Goah circuit court at Woodsock at 2 p.m. after both sides rested this morning. Ogden did not testify in his defense.
The Coast Guard reported a Constellation airliner with 60 people on board was ditched about 80 miles at sea near Miami at 1 27 p m. Eastern Airlines said the plane was theirs. The last transmission from the aircraft was We are ditching. A major rescue effort began immediately.

White Sands New Mexico February 7 American scientists controlled a German V-2 rocket in flight maneuvering left to right and up and down. The rocket reached about 70 miles in altitude and the Army called the achievement the most important advance in guided missile development since the war.
An airplane ran away from its pilot and flew 710 miles before crashing near Oshawa Ontario. The two-seater had started with the throttle open and the pilot Stan Fraser could not board in time. It droned over ice covered Lake Simcoe and crashed after exhausting fuel in about 30 minutes.

Rev Charles Noyes Tyndell of Winchester will be guest speaker at 11 am tomorrow at Christ Episcopal church. He has lived here since retirement from active ministry and previously served at a Front Royal parish.
President Colgate W Darden Jr of the University of Virginia told the Virginia legislature America must keep a sustained peace through technical and industrial superiority over Russia. He warned of a ruthless plan by the Russian leadership to subvert Western society and slavery. He urged building living standards and a skilled, democratic-educated labor force as the main defense. Gov Tuck added a brief remark before the address.
