President Truman said a formula to halt major strikes, including steel, should be ready in a day or two. He described it as not a new wage price plan but a plan to meet current national production needs and believed mass production would adjust the situation.
The House approved 258 to 155 a controversial Case bill to curb strikes and lockouts, creating a federal mediation board, court injunctions, civil actions, and penalties to enforce a cooling off period and ban violent or deceptive labor actions.
The death sentence for Yamashita was upheld by executive review in Manila. Lt. Gen. Wilhelm D. Styer will execute secretly and announce the result, with witnesses barred from publication. The decision follows the Philippines Supreme Court and U S Supreme Court rulings, placing final mercy in MacArthur’s hands.
