In a long session the Common Council enacted a license tax ordinance for 1928 adding new subjects: painters, brick masons, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and vendors. Gasoline tax favored by few. auto and truck licensing time reduced to 60 days. five tax free cars allowed for dealers for demonstration. Commissioner fees reduced from 75 cents to 50 cents.
Mr Eugene J Chapman of Lynch Va has returned home after visiting at his aunt Lyda Chapman in Millwood. He accompanied his mother as far as Millwood where she was called by the illness of her sister Mrs Ernest L Alger.
Major Lillard, 48, of Winchester, died at Memorial Hospital at 3 a m from blood poisoning caused by an elbow injury at Beck's Bakery. He formerly worked at Green Orchard in Apple Ridge and was born in Sperryville Virginia. Survived by his wife and two small children. Funeral arrangements pending.
John C. Holden of Hyattsville Maryland and Georgetown University scored two world records at a major track meet held recently at Harvard University. Holden is a well known local figure who helped lead the local baseball team to victory last season.
One man was severely wounded in a gun battle with 15 prohibition agents in Prince Georges county near Walnut Maryland. Agents seized three stills including a 1000 gallon capacity unit and a large amount of corn whiskey. The wounded man refused to identify himself while others remained at large as authorities pursued bootleggers. The raid was led by Washington officers under Lieut. C T Davids and follows recent operations against local bootleggers.
Demand prompts evening courses in Radio and Cooking. Registration can be made tonight at the Equity building. Classes run from 7 30 to 9 p.m.

Firemen fought two alarms within an hour destroying a three story brick business block and a third floor dance hall in the city. About 130000 in damage with partial insurance. One blaze blamed on decorations while another suspect as possible arson near a district telephone company operators dance.
Mrs. Margaret Gore of Winchester aged 70 died at her home on National Avenue at 3 45 this morning after a brief pneumonia illness. She leaves two sons William Gore of Philadelphia and C Luther Gore of this city, two sisters, and will be interred at Mount Hebron beside her late husband.
Cake sale by the ladies of the Catholic Church scheduled for Saturday February 10 starting at 10 A.M. in Solenberger's window. Proceeds support church activities and community programs.
The Woman's Missionary Society of the First Christian Church will conduct the service this Wednesday at 7 30 p.m. A program of special music recitation and a missionary play titled The Clinic of a Missionary Critic will be presented. The public is invited to attend and a bank offering will be collected at the end.
Dr J B E Larrick, a Kansas pioneer dentist long based in Oberlin, dies after a long illness. Born in Frederick County, he settled in Oberlin 35 years ago and served three large counties with daily appointments. He leaves widow, son Dr Vincent Larrick of Wyoming, two brothers, and a sister. Funeral and interment set in Oberlin.
The Turkish commander at Smyrna warned allied warship commissioners of withdrawal enforcement if they do not depart Smyrna, while Lausanne reports Ishmet Pasha and key Turkish delegates departing Lausanne for Angora at 7 o'clock.

Savannah Ga Feb 7 The transport St Michiel with American troops from Germany arrived at Tybee bar at noon. Convoyed by the Yamacraw and the tug McCauley she proceeded to quarantine.
Mr. Chapman, general manager of the ready-to-wear department of F. S. Emmart, Son and Company dry goods store, announces the formal opening of that department on Saturday February 10. The department has been refitted in quartered oak and will guide future store renovations. Welch-Wilmart Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan did the work.
A blaze at the Hotel St. Charles at El Paso and Overland streets killed one woman and two men early today. Five others were injured in the fire that swept the hotel. An advertisement seeks fodder at 1298 Main St.
