Fire devours eleven unit Highland Ave tenement. 55 left homeless
A sleet slick blaze swept through a two story tenement on Highland Ave at 12 25 am leaving at least 55 people homeless and stripped of clothes and belongings. Firefighters fought for hours but the 50 year old building could not be saved. No injuries were reported. A dog was rescued from a water soaked couch. Burned units included seven of eleven apartments in Nos 517 to 537. The cause was undetermined pending inspection. an oil heating stove may have exploded or caught fire.

Co owner estimates the Winchester Surgical Clinic suffered more than 250000 dollars in damage after an explosion and ensuing fire that erupted yesterday before 8 am. Five residents in adjoining apartments were treated with Mrs Martha Reardon seriously injured and in ICU. Fire crews fought both the clinic blaze and a rowhouse fire on Highland Ave.
