Allied offensives extend on three fronts with First and Third Armies driving into the Reich near Monschau and Colmar pockets, while Soviets push toward the Oder and threaten Berlin from the north. Manila offensive progresses as Tokyo reports Philippines landings.
Senator Byrd reports War Department study of Millville and Brock's Gap dams to control floods. The plan would create a 54 mile lake, flood 23 500 acres including 16 300 in Virginia, inundate three villages, require new bridges, and affect 20 000 acres. Landowners can seek detailed maps at the George Washington Hotel in Winchester during the week of February 12.
American tanks and Moroccan troops slice the Colmar pocket in the Vosges, trapping elements of German divisions and reducing the pocket to under 200 square miles. U.S. First Army reaches near the Rhine at Bonn and advances into the Siegfried Line near Prum and Brandscheid with Alsatian towns falling to Allied forces.
Winchester and nearby communities stage a blood donation drive on February 7 8 and 9 to fill the national quota. About 2000 local men serve in the armed forces. some have sacrificed, some are wounded or convalescing, others yet battle abroad. Citizens urged to donate a pint in their honor.
Henry L Crawford 35 Navy Steward’s Mate 2 C stationed at Bainbridge Maryland was killed in a late Saturday car wreck on Route 2 twelve miles west of Berryville He was en route to Winchester to visit his wife and apparently lost control the car rolled and caught fire Crawford was thrown clear two passengers Katherine Byrd and Ted Kent suffered injuries and were hospitalized Kent and Byrd’s knee injuries were serious while Kent had no serious injuries Mrs Katie Rhodes Set William Rhodes Jr and Sgt John Hickey were first at the scene Dr A P Osborne Clarke county coroner ruled Crawford dead at arrival The burning auto was a total loss Funeral arrangements not yet completed and no flowers are requested Surviving are his widow Bertie Willis of 35 Hart Street sisters Beatrice Thornton Josephine Crawford Alice Crawford Gertrude Dolman Sammy Crawford Roy Dolman in New Guinea Eddie Dolman Berryville an aunt Marie Good Winchester and other relatives He was born in New Jersey and worked for American Viscose in Front Royal prior to Navy service.
Four servicemen and seven civilians connected with the Charley Rouss Fire Company were memorialized at a memorial service and sermon at the Congregational Christian Church. The list included Capt. William G. Pingley Jr and others with music by the church choir and the Historic City Quartet.
General MacArthur's forces push toward central Manila after seizing Malacanang Palace and Santo Tomas camp. Lt Col George F Miller former State Highway Police officer and son of Dr and Mrs E W Miller of this city was killed in action in Germany on January 20. He served with General Patton s Third Army in an infantry unit and had been overseas since June 1944. He was forty years old and the highest ranking local officer reported killed to date.
Several hundred RAF heavy bombers hit Bonn's rail center in western Germany and attacked Ruhr Valley industries and communications. Berlin reports claim a 1,000 Fortress raid may have damaged rail lines feeding the Eastern Front. five fleets struck Nordstern Osterfeld Hannover and Dortmund plants with five bombers lost to flak.
The Appropriations Committee sent to the House a 3,218,808,000 independent offices supply measure to fund over twenty agencies for the next fiscal year starting July 1. Most agencies see cuts, while the Veterans Administration allocation rises sharply to 2,707,119,250 to cover new costs including the GI Bill.
Senate Military Committee reversed earlier stance and ordered limited executive hearings on manpower bills. Chairman Thomas said invited witnesses would testify, with War Department officials Stimson Patterson and Forrestal to appear. The War Department backs bringing manpower controls under Byrnes, provoking cross messages within the administration.
Clarke County Women’s Club and the aville area sponsor a February 8 forum at 8 PM in the Court House Berryville to discuss the Denny Commission recommendations for advancing Virginia’s educational system. Hobson C. McGehee will chair. Rose MacDonald will review the report for the State Board of Education and speakers include county leaders Clifton Price and A E Robertson among others.
At the January meeting of Col. James C. Baker Camp N 23 United Spanish War Veterans officers were installed by Past Commander Harry T. Cook for the coming year. Commander Samuel W. Shewbridge and others took posts, with appointive officers named. A special meeting is called for next Thursday evening Feb 8, inviting all Spanish American War veterans within twenty miles of Winchester to attend. The camp meets at Knights of Pythias Hall 277 Boscawen Street.
