Miner Survives Eight Foodless Days in WV Mine Rescue
Robert Johnson, a 36 year old rural mail carrier, was trapped for eight foodless days in a collapsed West Virginia mine. Rescuers found him two miles from the entrance behind slate, after prayers and a dim glow of light guided their approach. He drank sulfur water and coffee, ate strained soup, and was treated by doctors before being put to sleep. Fellow townspeople aided in rescue and first aid as Johnson expressed gratitude for surviving.
