Carnes sentenced to five to seven years for mission thefts
Clinton C Carnes former treasurer of the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board pleaded guilty in Atlanta Superior Court to embezzlement involving an $80 000 theft and received a minimum five year sentence with a potential seven year maximum. He had faced twenty indictments and agreed to plead as requested by the Home Mission Board while his other indictments could be activated if he seeks a pardon before serving the minimum term. The board said Carnes deeded all he had to the organization to cover possible further shortages. The presiding judge noted Carnes was getting off light.

A 26 year old man identified as James Johnson of Brunswick Maryland was arrested in Cumberland after suspected robberies and shooting near Shenandoah Junction West Virginia.
