The U S unemployment rate fell to 7.3 percent in January from 7.8 percent in December amid an unexplained drop in the labor force. Labor Department analysts note severe winter weather may partly explain the labor force decline and warn full weather impact may appear in February job figures.
The State Corporation Commission says gas service will remain off for nonessential users in central and western Virginia beyond February 13. Extension length to be decided, with estimates ranging to March 15 or April 1. Gas transfers are unlikely, and many workers may be laid off if the curtailment continues.
