Charley William Love an 18 year old AWOL Navy recruit from Reed Kentucky was rescued after being trapped three to five days in a sealed railroad refrigerator car in Chicago He was treated at a hospital where his condition was listed as critical but not life threatening Doctors said no extremities were frozen and amputation would likely not be needed Love had been absent without leave from Great Lakes Naval Training Center since Monday and officials said this was at least his second or third AWOL incident He was found when railroad workers opened the car at Santa Fe yards to wash it
A twin engine Navy transport caught fire and crashed two miles off Fort Lauderdale Beach. Two crewmen perished, two survived after parachuting to safety. Pilot Capt. Robert W. Anderson reported the blaze began over Miami Beach.
James Lee Franklin of Stephens City was sentenced to five years in the penitentiary after pleading guilty to arson in the Kernstown Motel and Restaurant fire of October 11, 1955. Three years were suspended and he must pay costs. Judge Elliott Marshall presided after a probation report. Grace H Brown was acquitted in a related arson case. Separately, James Levi Barton was found guilty on two counts related to Cornwell's Tavern entry and thefts, receiving two years on count two and 40 days on count three, with costs.

Lonnie Page, 34, also a Washington Negro, was arrested here after trying to claim a stolen 1949 Buick. The car was found behind Solenbergers Store with the stolen merchandise valued near 500 dollars including a radio rifle lingerie and clothing.
Senator James Eastland of Mississippi urged the South to resist interracial integration, endorsing interposition as a main weapon and challenging U S Supreme Court anti segregation rulings. The Alabama case marked a turning point as Authrine Lucy, a Black student, enrolled at the University of Alabama amid protests and court battles.
About 1,000 white male students gathered on the University of Alabama campus to protest the enrollment of Autherine Lucy, the first Black student, marching to the president’s home and then dispersing after a late evening rally. Police described some actions as panty raids with cross burning and fireworks but made no arrests. Lucy attended classes under police guard amid curiosity and tension on campus.
In Buchanan County Circuit Court Elk Creek man Robert Mounts 23 was acquitted of murder after a 55 minute jury deliberation. The case involved the death of 50 year old Arnold Hurley burned after a drinking party on a mountain near Elk Creek on November 9. Hurley died in Richlands hospital November 28. The commonwealth alleged Mounts poured moonshine on Hurley and ignited his clothing. the defense said Hurley rolled into the fire while drunken.
Judy Garland files for divorce from Sid Luft in Santa Monica claiming cruelty and seeks equitable division of community property and custody of two children Lorna and Joseph. Garland, previously married to David Rose and Vincente Minnelli, helped by Luft in her 1950s comeback amid past tensions and MGM troubles.
