Associated Press reports Chief of Police C. W. Hollis underwent a three hour operation at St Elizabeths Hospital Richmond Virginia for removal of a gastric ulcer. He was given local anesthesia and was said to have a good night with his condition listed as satisfactory.

Berryville Va February 2 Witnesses for the defense continued in Clarke Circuit Court as Leo Shorty Gaunt appeals a conviction on ABC law violations. Commonwealth's Attorney Edward McCormick Williams led the prosecution, with Frank Wray defending Gaunt. Six jurors were listed in the case with a late trial schedule.
Atlanta, February 2. About 40 000 housewives and mothers may be asked to report lynching activity. Mrs. Jessie Daniel Ames, executive director of Southern Women for the Prevention of Lynching, argues reporting can alert communities and newspapers to mob beginnings to spur counter action.
Virginia Governor Price declares support for both U S Senators Carter Glass and Harry F Byrd as delegates to the Democratic National Convention.
