Vandals Damage Orrick Cemetery in Valley Ave Break-in

11 Die in the Northeast and West in New Year Holiday Traffic

Traffic accidents killed at least 11 people during the New Year weekend as snow and rain disrupted travel from the Northeast to the Pacific Northwest. The State Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries purchased 1952 acres on the east side of Paris Mountain known as Apple Manor. Deed signed Tuesday, area closed to the public after today. Hunting permits honored until decision on recreation. Public use hoped for by the spring gobbler season in April. Purchase funded by hunting licenses and sporting goods taxes. no general tax money used.

Byrd Named Star's Business Manager in Winchester

Thomas T. Byrd has been named business manager of The Winchester Evening Star. The 25 year old is the fourth generation in his family to run the Star. A Staunton Military Academy and VMI alumnus, he served in the U.S. Marines including Vietnam duty, then earned a Lynchburg College history and political science degree. He joined The Star during college and now lives with his wife Dana in Clarke County with one daughter, Courtney.

Weather clears as cold front lowers Virginia temps
