The Associated Press report notes 113 traffic deaths, with 213 deaths by mid-holiday and a total of 274 when including fires and miscellaneous accidents. NSC President NED H. DEARBORN urged care as fatalities potentially approach a new record.
Nine people have died during the New Year holiday weekend in Virginia as police tally 820 fatalities for the year. A fatal Grundy crash on Rt 460 left Vernon and Cleavons Smith and Ronald Hamilton dead, while Robert Wills and Velva Dover perished in a separate late Saturday collision on U.S. 33 near Elkton.
In Seligman Arizona blood hounds two Air Force planes a helicopter and volunteers search rugged northern Arizona terrain for 7 year old Jack Hodges who vanished Saturday from a ranch with his parents Lloyd and Bell Hodges. The dog returned without him as temperatures drop to 14 below.

Clarke County Commonwealth Attorney Williams obtained a warrant for Paul Harlan a former sales manager for H F Byrd Inc over alleged theft of canned apple products worth over 5000 He was arrested Friday in Berryville lodged in jail posted 5000 bail and must appear in court January 14 He gave a written statement and is represented by J Edward Thoma
Secretary of State Dulles meets with UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold in New York to explain the Eisenhower administration’s plan to counter Soviet expansion in the Middle East with economic and military support. The plan seeks up to 400 million dollars over two years for Mediterranean states while aiming to avoid direct US troop deployment unless needed.
Budapest reports the Hungarian delegation under Foreign Minister Imre Horvath will rejoin the United Nations General Assembly on Friday after walking out on December 11. Her husband Norman leads Villanova's chemistry department.
Frost damaged truck crops from Miami to the Everglades as a seven day cold spell pestered the state. Meteorologist Warren O. Johnson of the Frost Warning Service in Lakeland said there may be further damage in the Everglades and lower East Coast while North Florida stayed above danger temperatures overnight.
The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld lower court desegregation decrees for Charlottesville and Arlington. The court said the orders are not harsh but necessary to end racial discrimination and observe the law. Mandates to implement begin dates are affirmed with potential further appeals.
