Fire Chief E W Argenbright announces resignation as chief and will serve as volunteer until council appoints a paid successor. Applications include Raymond Campbell and Taylor Barr. He also leaves Lovett Brothers Shoe Store management effective January 4 to join Huntsberry’s.
Andrew Bell was elected secretary treasurer of the Winchester Kiwanis Club for the 25th time, making him the dean of secretaries in the first division and possibly the entire Capital District. Other long serving first division secretaries include Everett Hallmuth of Alexandria with 19 years and Bruce Lightner of Hagerstown with 18 years.
High temperature reached 30 degrees and the low dipped to 28. Compared with last year’s readings of 42 for the high and 34 for the low, today shows a cooler day with a smaller gap between daily extremes.
The Fellowship Club, serving Winchester and Frederick County, reports 124 Winchester families and 102 Frederick County families on its master list. Of these, 62 Winchester and 33 Frederick families were adopted, while the rest received baskets from headquarters. A noon dinner at the George Washington Hotel honored George Dieckman upon his retirement after 38 years with H J Heinz. He began in 1908 at Hicksville and rose to Winchester plant manager, to be succeeded by Kenneth L. Miller. Dieckman and wife plan a Florida vacation before returning to Winchester.
The Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph report in Washington dispatches that Britain and the United States have taken steps toward an Anglo American air force. Draft plans for joint training of RAF and U S Army Air Forces personnel were submitted to Gen Carl A Spaatz for signature.
Representatives from Virginia met in Bland's office to discuss early committee assignments. Attendees included Almond Smith Flannagan Bland and Reps Elect Hardy Harrison, all Democrats, with Gary Drewry and Stanley absent. Flannagan said the talks covered committee organization and placing new members on key panels.

Trooper Fant cited cuts, contusions and a dislocated hip. Also on Route 7 two miles west of Berryville Frank Weight skidding on wet pavement caused his 1941 Chevrolet to leave the road. Voight suffered facial contusions.
President Truman’s proclamation ending hostilities could automatically lower the 1947 tax bill by about 700 million dollars. Excises on liquor jewelry furs luggage and other items will be cut as of July 1 under wartime revenue act provisions. Liquor tax drops 9 to 6 per proof gallon with other reductions for furs admissions wines beer and services.
