President elect Kennedy named Robert V. Roosa to be under secretary for monetary affairs and ArcHibal Cox as solicitor general as he reviews foreign and domestic policy with Sen. Fulbright. Salinger cited impending trips and possible news conference before inauguration January 20.
Betty Madigan, Washington singer famed for Firemen parade marshal duty, headlines at the Shoreham Hotel Blue Room with The Washington Post calling her “Good, very good.” Reviewers praise her big voice, range, beehive style and stage response amid strong applause.
A column of rebel troops from Stanleyville entered northern Katanga and contacted Baluba tribesmen fighting Tshombe. United Nations reports say the force entered via Kivu and neared Kongolo, a center of ongoing guerrilla war. Kongolo lies over 400 miles south of Stanleyville where Gizenga governs. U.N. says Germans in Kivu face arrests and ill treatment by rebels.
In Noyan Quebec, Marijorie Vosburgh 43 and 11 of her 15 children perished when a stove caused an explosion and a blaze that consumed their wooden house. Abel Vosburgh escaped with one child but later it was learned all remaining children were elsewhere. Abel received treatment for burns. The list of the dead includes Doris Ray Richard Phyllis Katherine Audrey Beverley Robert Caroline Leo Dwayne Gladys Gertrude Irvin Allan and others.
In Fredericksburg Virginia a massive search for 10 year old Chris D Meador resumed with investigators blasting ice from the Rappahannock River and a canal near a major roadway. About 300 people participated yesterday and Marines from Quantico joined today with police rescue squads and volunteers.
A storage tank at Sun Gas Products Corp in Bayonne's Constable Hook exploded Friday night, sending flames 1000 feet high and shattering windows over blocks. Four men were injured, including a 40 year old truck driver with third degree burns, as hundreds fled their homes and a five block area was evacuated. Firefighters brought the blaze under control hours later as they guarded an adjacent oil tank.
Roads slick after an off again on again snow shower left about an inch of new snow. Bridges and primary highways treated with abrasives while secondary roads require chains. Intermittent drizzle and freezing rain forecast, with temperatures between 19 and 29 degrees.
In Salmon Idaho a wandering skunk, claimed to be Peewee the deodorized pet, prompted a radio report to KSRA. Ray Woods alerted the station after a skunk entered his back door, but Larry Bell and wife Linda concluded the animal was a stranger and fled as it returned to the woods.

Theron Luther George Jr. an 18 year old from DeKalb County drove his car along the Seaboard Air Line tracks for five miles including trestles and a bridge ahead of a fast freight train. He was arrested for drunkenness on private property and received a six month sentence. Train engineer J B Broom described the perilous ride and praised the driver’s handling while noting the danger and the judge’s firm stance.

As chief U S delegate he will navigate expanded U N membership and Asian African bloc pressure while backing Hammarskjold’s peace efforts and restraint on colonialism resolutions.
King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola flew home from their honeymoon as 15,600 demonstrators surged through Brussels. The Socialist led strike damaged property and blocked districts while security forces guarded government buildings. Demonstrators demanded tax cuts and reduced pensions with police and troops deployed in the capital.
Vice President Richard Nixon refused a NBC televised salute to Eisenhower citing scheduling conflicts and a policy against recent TV appearances. Press secretary Herbert G. Klein said Nixon wanted to honor the president but would not participate publicly on air for now.
