U S Marines battled a strong Communist force about 20 miles south of Da Nang. A helicopter airlift placed Marines into a muddy rice paddy as enemy fire challenged each landing. Marines consolidated behind dikes as sporadic fire continued through the night with no casualties announced.
A 16 year old juvenile charged with the murder of James Russell Jr., 79, of near Brucetown, was extradited from Charles Town, West Virginia. The suspect, apprehended near Mt. Pleasant, is in Clarke County jail after waiving extradition. Russell was beaten and shot December 18, his car and body found in Opequon Creek.
The U S Command reports 166 American deaths in the week ending Saturday and 1,361 wounded, with 762 not needing hospitalization. Total American casualties reach 15,812 killed and 99,305 wounded. 866 missing or captured. South Vietnamese losses include 234 killed and 629 wounded. enemy deaths reported at 1,523. Troop strength in South Vietnam surpassed U S forces at the Korean War peak.
Town notices remind residents to clear snow from walks and around mail boxes to aid delivery. A sighting on Senseng Road reports six to seven dozen eggs spilled near Senseny Road Elementary School, possibly from a bump. City Councilman Carroll H. Henkel announced today he will run again, becoming the second councilman to seek another term. James Fleming and Mayor William M. Battaile have also declared, with six council seats and a mayor to be filled next year. Henkel, recently released from Georgetown University Hospital, said his health is improving and recovery should be complete. He chairs the Fire and Civil Defense Committee and is a council member.
Shenandoah Downs in Charles Town West Virginia cancelled tonight's racing program because of snow. Racing will resume Friday night and conclude New Years Day with an afternoon program starting at 2 p.m. 125 S. Loudoun.

Emergency Snow Plan A activated in Winchester to deploy salt and snow tires while plows and abrasives were readied.
A low pressure system from the eastern Gulf of Mexico brought rain sleet and snow to Virginia. Western areas could see eight inches or more as the system moves northeast along the coast with precipitation ending late tonight or Friday morning.
