MacArthur reports Japanese and American task forces clashed on Mindoro and Iwo Jima. Japanese ships shelled Mindoro while US forces bombed Iwo Jima and nearby targets. Destroyers and ships were damaged on both sides with several vessels sunk or heavily hit.
Winter sleet coated highways with a packed inch delaying travel in Winchester this morning. Roads were icy as freezing rain and sleet lingered until early evening. Buses ran about 30 minutes behind schedule while city and county police reported no accidents. Road crews worked promptly as Winchester Research Lab logged an inch of snow and .49 inches of precipitation.
Lee Riley Franklin of near Stephens City was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter by a Winchester Corporation Court jury. The panel set his punishment at one year in state prison. defense moved to set verdict aside. Witnesses said Franklin aided in the fight that killed Sisk. Collier previously convicted of second degree murder and jailed for 10 years. Franklin, married with six children, posted bond and was released pending January 6.
Leon Degrelle, head of Belgium’s Rexist movement, was condemned to death in absentia by the Brussels Court of Collaborators. Accusations include aiding the Germans with soldiers and supplies, fomenting civil war, bearing arms against Belgium, and leading the Walloon Guard under German officers. Degrelle has been in German hands since before their exit from Belgium.
The Winchester War Price and Ration Board will be closed all day Friday December 29 to complete mailing of the 1945 first quarter gasoline allotments for trucks.
Pvt Albert M Luttrell was killed in France on November 22 after being missing since November 2. He served nine months with the 141st Infantry Seventh Army in Italy and France, trained at Camp Blanding, and earned law degrees from the University of Virginia. He is survived by wife Rosa, mother Inez, brother Ralph J Luttrell in Washington, and nephew Phillip James Luttrell.
Winchester stores will close on New Year s Day January 1, following the custom. The closure was announced by W R Strader president of the Winchester Retail Merchants Association.

Staff Sergeant Joe L. Pope of Berryville died of wounds received in action with the 9th Division in Holland on December 19. He saw his brother Sgt. Robert E. Pope in Paris in early December and was part of D-Day forces in England and France. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs Fred Pope and three brothers in service. three sisters also mentioned.
The Asahai and Mainichi report extravagant claims while Gen. H. H. Arnold announces one B-29 shot down in the Tokyo area. Japanese headquarters claim 14 Super-Fortresses shot down with five probable and 27 damaged as fighter actions continue.
