A telegraph reports the sudden death of Captain W. A. Merritt U S Navy at his Charleston yard home. The body travels to Baltimore for burial at Mount Hebron? Bruce lot. Services at Christ Episcopal Church with Rev Robt B Nelson officiating. Survived by widow Elise Oldham and a son W A Merritt Jr. Admiral McCully will accompany remains.
A California derailment near San Bernardino involved an engine and seven cars leaving a ditch while speeding down a grade toward the Mojave desert. Officials blamed railroad saboteurs for removing a spike, injuring Mrs. E F Mackie of Los Angeles and W H Burbage of Winslow Arizona among passengers.
R Tucker Luttrell longtime Frederick county resident died at his home near Siler in the sixty fourth year after a lingering illness. He survived by his widow formerly Miss Hariet Heflin a son J W Luttrell of Woodstock and five daughters Mrs Olin DeHaven Mrs Walter Dailey Mrs G W Gill and Misses Erva and Dorothy Luttrell. Also six brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at Chestnut Grove Methodist Church with interment in the churchyard.
Memorial Hospital reports little improvement in Ben Armel former city policeman and Gilmer Jackson engineer for Glaize and Brother after a box of about 1060 dynamite and nitroglycerine caps exploded during a Christmas celebration at Armel’s North Kent street home. Armel may lose a leg and Jackson may lose sight in one eye, according to afternoon updates.
A large gathering attended the 2 PM service at Christ Protestant Episcopal Church for Daniel Burr Conrad who died in Memorial Hospital. A graveside service followed at Mount Hebron Cemetery with Episcopal burial chants and the Rev. Robert B. Nelson officiating. Pallbearers included Chas. L. Bowly and Stuart Hunter. out of town mourners came from New York Washington and Baltimore among others.
Edgar W. Newman assistant manager of Winchester Cold Storage Corporation was elected president of the Stenan doah National Bank in Woodstock to succeed his late brother Wilbur L. Newman. He is a Woodstock native and fourth in a line of Newman leaders of the county’s largest financial institution.
The treasury annual list for the fiscal year ending June 30 shows $142,312,567 in illegal and erroneous taxes refunded to 168,561 individuals and corporations. Ten refunds exceed $1,000,000 with R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co at Winston-Salem taking the largest at $78,213,308, followed by American Tobacco Co and subsidiaries in New York with $4,270,059. Also noted is a West Point cadet home for Christmas from cadet E. W. Cather through parents Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Cather awaiting holidays.
President elect Hoover outlines a plain inauguration plan during a ten day post South American tour. He will report on his Latin America mission and discuss cabinet and appointments while in Washington. Public talks focus on a restrained ceremony and a broader air transport discussion.
Command Richard E Byrd reports from the Antarctic ice barrier on Christmas Day that the crew has carried the American flag further south than ever. He notes they are 2,400 statute miles from the nearest human relic and that shore contact may be delayed by ice in the Bay of Whales.
The case arises from a Front Royal shooting at the Methodist Church after a feud over a damaged auto. Henry C. Robinson was acquitted of wounding one victim but remains indicted for Middleton Johnson. A second trial was anticipated with a nol pros possible, while defense and state attorneys discuss prospects.

Salvation Army will host a seven thirty p m Christmas tree entertainment at the Court House Auditorium inviting every needy child to attend on time. Commandant Cuthbert and Mrs Cuthbert lead the program with recitations solos and music. The sale of the Robert XII Bertury farm of about 120 acres is set for noon Saturday December 29 in front of the Court House with a sale pill notice.

Ngese Rosenfeld and Joseph and Merry Kirson of Samuel Kirson & Sons were injured in a car crash near Centerville Virginia while traveling toward Baltimore. Harry Kirson drove blind from opposing headlights into a wagon driven by Walter B. Lewis. The wagon driver was not seriously hurt. Kirsons suffered cuts and teeth injuries. Rosenfeld was bedridden at his Baltimore home.
Six Best new sons were killed when a Soo Line train struck an automobile at a grade crossing in Berwyn Illinois. Mrs Halvor Olsen and others were injured as the car stalled on the track. The train stopped yards away and bystanders rushed to aid victims. Witnesses said warning signals began ringing as the Olsen car started across.
High money rates blocked stock market advance as call money rose from 10 to 12 percent and banks called $25,000 in loans. Interior banks offered little new funds, and rates were expected to firm further. A few specialties rose 2 to 9 points on mergers or earnings, but overall prices fell 3 to 10 points with moderate volume. Trade and business news remained favorable.
Four state prisoners were killed and seven injured when a mine cage carrying 35 men in Sanford, North Carolina, plunged into a shaft after the cable broke. Eleven men attempted to leap to safety, two died at once and two died the next day. the others were injured or untouched. All victims reported as African American.
London December 27 an official noon statement said there is no change in King George's condition. The public welcomed the update after physicians reported the king was making slow progress and that no further bulletins would be issued until tonight.
Robert B. Ingle, manager of Winchester gas plant for Consumers Utilities, is chosen to helm the gas plant of National Gas and Electric Co in Greeley Colorado, effective January. H A Sebald announces plans for continued expansion and service to about 200 additional homes as new gas mains extend into Shawnee Heights Harris Addition Berryville pike Lomdoun Manor and Northwestern grade. The company reports growth and new facilities including a 150 900 cubic foot gas holder and a new warehouse on Pell Mall street with ongoing plant upgrades to meet city growth.
