A two-accident sequence on the Martinsburg Pike leaves three men dead. Thomas G. Scully, driver of the first car, and I. N. Grubbs, at the wheel of the second, are named in the report as victims. A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
A. Lee Coble of the Winchester VFW announced military honors for World War I veteran Fred Miller Affieck. The service is Monday at 2 PM at Braddock Street M. E. Church after a 1:30 PM gathering at the veteran’s home. Fire halls citywide were draped in tribute to the late Sarah Zane truck driver.
Late last night on the Martinsburg turnpike two crashes killed Fred Affleck Duke, 40, a Fire Company driver and WW veteran, Dewey Newlin, 39, of Frederick County, and Homer Hook, Winchester truck driver. One injured, Patrolman R. E. Bayliss. Scully, Winchester attorney, drove the car that struck the victims. he was arrested and later released on $1,000 bond for a preliminary hearing next Tuesday. Coroner Dr. James A. Miller held an inquest with findings that Newlin was struck by Grubbs and Hook and Affleck by Scully. Officers responded. Affleck had been at Charley Rouss Fire Company duties prior.
Mr Winchester notes Christmas was happy and thanks the community for commendable efforts to decorate residences in the city. Automobiles moved slowly past displays Friday night and residents are urged to tour the city again this evening to enjoy the illumination. Appreciation is expressed for those who cooperated.
Two people received slight injuries yesterday when their automobile rear ended a southbound Route 11 bus that had stopped in front of the high school to discharge passengers. John Snyder drove the bus. Robert Dodson of Winchester led the car with his brother aboard. Both Dodsons were treated at Memorial Hospital and discharged. Police said the car and bus were damaged. summons were issued for a hearing before Trial Justice A J Tavenner next Friday.
The AP reports that Congress faces major questions on neutrality with President Roosevelt favored to have broad discretion. Twenty five boys aged 10 to 14, selected by Rotary members, enjoyed a turkey dinner at the George Washington Hotel during the club's weekly luncheon. Miss Lelia Catherine Shiner of Winchester died at 4 PM Thursday at 102 South Kent after six weeks of illness due to complications. She was 64, born September 15, 1872, daughter of the late Charles David and Lyda Shiner, and leaves one sister Annie V. Finfrock and a brother Charles E. Shiner plus nieces, nephews, and a cousin Virginia McCauley. Funeral from 102 South Kent Street at 3 PM Sunday, with Rev. Dr. Hubert Sydenstricker officiating. interment Mount Hebron Cemetery.
The Sunday School of Burnt Church near Albin will present a Christmas program of songs and recitations at 7:30 Tuesday evening. Phil H. Gold is superintendent. A cordial welcome awaits all attendees.

An official communique says on December 23 an explosion aboard the steamship Cesare Battisti in Massaua Eritrea killed 26 and injured 100. Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Fries widow of Prof. J Newton Fries died yesterday morning after a short illness in Berkeley Springs West Virginia She was 86 born March 12 1850 and spent winter with her daughter Latrobe Hunter Her survivors include three daughters Latrobe Hunter Erle Arbuckle Laura E Fries and three sisters Funeral services will be held at the United Brethren Church in Berkeley Springs Sunday at 2 PM with interment in the family lot.
The Opequon Memorial Presbyterian Church at Kernstown will hold a Christmas entertainment at 7 30 o clock Monday evening December 28. A pageant titled The Road to Bethlehem will be presented by the church youths. Reverend Allen Jones is pastor. The public is invited to attend.
A truck driver hauling cattle from Tennessee to Baltimore was found unconscious near the Shenandoah River bridge at Berry's Ferry in Clarke county. He had a scalp wound and was treated by Dr. Smith in Boyce. Reports of a robbery or hit and run could not be confirmed as the man had left toward Baltimore.
