Hopewell Virginia December 26 14 lives were lost when a bus plunged through an open drawbridge into the Appomattox River. The 30 minute inquest returned a drowning verdict with details from eye witnesses and the autopsy on the driver pending.
Everyone enjoyed a Merry Christmas with snow optional for some. Many experienced giving gifts and Santa moments for the first time. The Fellowship Club’s yearly effort brings joy to donors and recipients, proving the season a fine celebration.
An earthquake struck southern Szechuan on December 18 leaving villages wiped out and thousands of deaths feared. Communications were destroyed and the Mapien district saw massive landslides and landscape changes including a river level drop of five feet after the Kinsha tributary was severed.
Local officers responded to a report that Riley Parrill shot his brother Charles Parrill Jr. The youths denial and lack of injuries showed the incident was a Christmas serenade with crackers. Parrill Sr. paid $4.25 in costs and the youth was released.
New York December 26 Robert Dary, formerly special counsel to the Senate committee on racketeering, predicted more prominent people would leave the United States similar to Lindberghs before public opinion pushes for ridding the country of gangsters.
Mrs. Alice Golliday of Middletown is out on $500 bond posted by E Linden Humston for appearance before Judge Williams in Frederick county circuit court on February 3. She was convicted by Trial Justice A J Tavenner of possessing a gallon and a half of illegal liquor and faced 30 days in jail and a $100 fine plus $1 000 bond to avoid Virginia ABC violations for a year. Her attorney F H Brumback noted an appeal to the circuit court after serving about 10 days in jail.
A deed recorded in the Corporation Court clerk's office shows James H. Myers purchasing a warehouse and lot in the Harris East Orchard tract for 1482 dollars. The sale was conducted by Johnny Alien, the special commissioner, and J Baker, trustee and special commissioner. The deed was recorded today.
President Roosevelt stays in the White House study drafting his annual state of the union and budget message. He meets Budget Director Daniel Bell and RCA president David Sarnoff and weighs neutral and domestic policy, with a likely focus on neutrality law and international affairs. The brief format and timing for delivery on January 3 or 4 are under consideration.
The office of Nan Keating director of Public Welfare in Winchester moved from City Hall Council Chamber to the second floor. The former Emergency Relief quarters now house the office which has no direct relief. only those able to work remain on the federal roll. The Works Progress Administration oversees employment projects for relief cases.
An ambulance driven by R C Ulmer Waycross undertaker crashed into a parked truck while rushing to a Christmas night crash. Ulmer was killed instantly his wife and son brought his body back to Waycross in another ambulance.
Secretary Ickes accepted deeds to the 190000 acre Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge area. Wilbur C. Hall presented the deeds on behalf of Virginia after nearly ten years of state effort. Hall projected the park would become one of the world’s great recreational areas when developed.
Waterbury Vermont December 26 three Army officers stationed at a veterans CCC camp perished when wooden barracks burned in bitter cold. Capt Roland D. Potter 52 of Northfield former Norwich University coach died with Capt Edwin W Boothby 37 from Watertown Mass assistant inspector of CCC camps and Lieut Leonard B Bushey 26 of Concord New Hampshire all reserve officers. Firefighters faced water shortages as 14 other officers escaped through windows and doors leaving a 2100 veteran camp largely deserted for holidays.
Sheriff investigated a dynamite explosion damaging the 1932 Chevrolet coupe owned by Ray Calvert in the Reynolds Store area. The blast occurred around one this morning with no occupants in the car. Calvert, son of the late D. Landon Calvert, has a noted family history linked to a prior incident.
Mrs Katherine C Hamilton a New York social figure filed for divorce in Reno Nevada charging cruelty against Alexander Hamilton nephew of J P Morgan The case marks a high society breakup with the couple unnamed in court filings and the date noted as December 26.
Federal Judge Merrill E. Otis dismissed a threatening letter as the work of a crank. The postmarked Chicago missive bore no writing and used clipped words and pictures from newspapers.

Five Ethiopians were killed and six wounded in a Christmas day clash with Danakil fighters under Italian banners on the eastern plateau slopes toward Danakil. Italian military police jailed 12 natives for spying. three executed, nine jailed up to 16 years. Ethiopian secret police expelled a Greek double agent. Captain Meade travels to Dessye with porters and mules to observe Haile Selassie. An Ethiopian report claims an Italian plane was shot down at Dageah Bur and the pilot was beheaded.
In Managua today the birth of quintuplets to Senor and Senora Timoteo Laines of the Sabana Grande village, Matagalpa Department, was reported. The three boys and two girls are all in perfect health.
In Wise County Edith Maxwell, a schoolteacher sentenced to 25 years for patricide, may have a second motion for a new trial by December 31. Richmond attorney M. J. Fulton said he will travel to Wise and disclose no details of the new evidence.
City engineers filed a collection of maps and blueprints valued at over $2,000 in a new fire resisting cabinet. Each item may be secured at a moment's notice.
At least four automobile mishaps occurred over Christmas Day. Two pedestrians were injured not seriously. Thomas Williams, about 70, fractured a leg entering his car near the ball park on Millwood Pike after his hat blew off in the wind. F Dovel of Stephens City nearly stopped to avoid him as Williams’ hat slipped under the car, causing the crash. Williams, unmarried, lives with his brother on Millwood road and helped run the old Williams Woolen Mill. James Brill Hart, nearly blind, reportedly walked into a car driven by George Garber on Valley Pike near Cedar Creek bridge, suffering a cut above the eye as his car overturned on ice. Richard E. Griffith Jr. was with Hart. both were uninjured. A Massie car, with Griffith, skidded on ice and rolled twice but no injuries. Charges of reckless driving against George Ashby Wigginton and Charles B. Affleck were dismissed with each to pay damages to his own car after a Welltown Pike collision.
Old Man Winter tightens hold on Christmas Day across the region with temperatures near one degree. Winds peaked at 34 mph at Admiral Byrd Airport this morning before easing to 10 mph by noon. A faint sun broke through hazy blue ridge skies as forecasters predict continued cold.
