Congressional investigators report progress on war readiness noting the navy is in satisfactory shape and preparations to improve shipping. They say American troops in training are better fed equipped and not freezing, with machine guns to arrive next April though some doubt its caliber.
The Friendship Bazar ended Monday night after a highly successful ten nights. The Anvito Truck Fund received a handsome addition. A banquet for helping ladies will be held next Monday at Friendship Hall, with Mr. J. P. Reardon expressing gratitude on behalf of the committee and company. The Friendship Fire Company staged vaudeville and a moving picture show at The Auditorium yesterday and last night, drawing a full house and enthusiastic encore. Local talent directed by Miss Douglas Fwiler was praised for a well received program that ran longer than planned.
A couple of Christmas drunks appeared before Justice Fultz in the police court. One man had a loaded revolver taken from him and was fined 20 dollars for the pistol plus 5 dollars and costs for the drunkenness. The other man was fined 7 dollars and costs. All fines were paid.

John H. Snyder of North avenue was severely burned when coal gas exploded in his cellar this morning. He rolled on the floor to extinguish flames after his clothing and hair were set alight. Dr. Ee C. Stuart attended. Snyder remains confined at home several days.
Dr. Harry A. Garfield federal fuel administrator told a Senate sub committee America faces a coal shortage of 50 million tons this year due to the war. He said production is up 10 percent but not enough to meet demand. blamed Mars for the shortage and noted bituminous coal is most affected while anthracite substitution has occurred.
French patrols penetrated German trenches near St. Quentin and in upper Alsace during the night and captured prisoners, the war office said. Besonvaux near Verdun saw heavy German bombardment checked by French artillery. A lost12 watch is offered for return to I Brumback with a reward.

A large barn fire near the Virginia West Virginia line destroyed a barn and its contents belonging to J. Robert Oates. The blaze consumed a horse, two head of cattle, twenty five tons of hay, 500 bushels of wheat, corn, and farming implements. The fire, believed incendiary, was discovered after flames had already engulfed the structure.
Mrs. Sarah A. Denny widow of Joseph S. Denny died at her nephew William G. Hardy’s home 817 South Washington street after a long life in Winchester. Born to English parents Charles and Lucy Herdy she joined Market Street Methodist Episcopal Church early and remained devoted. She survived by son James L. Denny of Columbia and siblings. funeral at the Hardy home will be followed by Mount Hebron Cemetery burial. A Christmas program with school superintendent Leslie D. Kline is announced at Valley Union Chapel tomorrow night.
Officers and employees of the Virginia Wooten Company and many relatives held their first Christmas entertainment in the basement. Santa distributed gifts to all, with a program featuring choruses, solos, readings, quartets, and a star spangled finale.
A Ford bearing license 36580 struck a large tree Sunday night in front of the McGuire property at Braddock and Amherst streets. The owner, a Clarke county resident in the army, was en route to Martinsburg to catch a train back to camp with furlough expired. He obtained another car and continued his journey.
Mr Nelson Richards, former pupil of Eton College, stationed at Camp Meade with the aviation corps, visits his parents Mr and Mrs A B Richards. Misses Mildrea and Mary Cooper, daughters of Mr and Mrs Co 8H Cooper, accompany their uncle Adolph Richards of Washington to Jacksonville Florida to visit Mr and Mrs Claud B Turner for the holidays.

Terrific fighting continues in northern Italy with gains reported by both sides. Berlin claims Cal delronse and 9,000 prisoners while Rome says most ground lost on Sunday was retaken. Fighting stretches from the Brenta river to mountain snow drifts with ongoing raids and heavy cannonading from the North Sea to the Swiss Alps. No other major developments reported by the British front.
Valor line reports detachments of American troops chasing Mexican bandits after they killed Michael Welch, a mail stage driver, and two Mexican American passengers near Candelaria. Troops followed the trail within thirty minutes. no word on pursuit outcomes yet.
The local exemption board urges all persons aged 21 to 31 to answer the questionnaire regardless of military service. It warns that failure to fill out the form subjects the person to heavy fines and imprisonment.
Rev and Mrs Walter Walters received a substantial pounding after the Christmas entertainment at the Christian Church on Friday. The surprise was greatly appreciated by the couple.
