Shoppers crowded the downtown streets as Christmas season winds down and stores prepare to close at 6 PM. Weather forecasters predict cloudy, colder days with possible flurries in nearby regions. Salvation Army baskets aid hundreds while Memorial Hospital plans a festive dinner for patients.

Vice President Nixon declared international Communism has suffered a mortal blow due to Hungarian sacrifices after returning from a study of refugees in Austria. He outlined upcoming recommendations to President Eisenhower on aiding 175,000 Hungarians seeking new homes and discussed border admission levels and refugee relief efforts.
Amid ongoing Middle East tensions, Christmas in Jerusalem is subdued with limited pilgrimage to Bethlehem. Jordan bars the consular procession and border barriers amid patrols by Arab Legionnaires and Israeli guards. Most pilgrims stay in Jordan. hotels are sparse and festive events are toned down by fuel shortages.
Secretary of State Dulles predicts the second postwar decade may bring peace but also danger. U S News and World Report published these and other non Communists views on peace prospects. Menzies and Rhee foresee increased risk of major war amid Suez events. Pineau urges realism for peaceful coexistence as Soviets fear atomic war.
Frederick County leads Virginia with 121 percent share of peach orchards, 90 orchards and 137 118 trees, while Albermarle drops from first to second with 109 440 trees in 58 orchards. State survey totals show peach trees in commercial orchards fell 26 percent from 1 115 684 in 1949 to 827 932 in 1956 and bearing age trees declined 34 percent from 977 780 to 649 022.

Roy Wolfe of Cumberland Maryland is listed in very serious condition at Memorial Hospital after a one car crash near Rio West Virginia Saturday night. He suffers two broken legs a broken right arm and severe head injuries and remains unconscious.
A Doctors Hospital blaze in Minneapolis sparked by a faulty Christmas light chain killed six people and left seven in critical condition. A baby died after being rescued from an incubator. many patients were moved to other hospitals, with Minneapolis General receiving most of the injured. Fire officials valued the damage at $100000.
A five story Meriden apartment fire killed a mother Julia Morales Rios 39 and four children Gladys 17 Isobel 6 Eddie Nelson 4 Eddie 3. A 5-year-old son Anibal and 20-year-old Jose were hospitalized with smoke inhalation. An uncle Albert Mirales 23 suffered injuries leaping from a window. Police and firefighters moved victims as theater patrons nearby evacuated.
Port Said reports delay in Suez Canal clearance as a UN salvage fleet awaits Egyptian approval to use British and French vessels. Dag Hammarskjold may visit Cairo to negotiate. Wheeler calls situation critical as operations await clearance and troop withdrawals continue.

Worthy signed documents waiving claims against the U S government for injury loss or detention. Red China had invited several U S journalists but the State Department prohibited the trip.
The National Safety Council says holiday driving risks could push traffic fatalities beyond 660 as 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Tuesday elapses. At press time 411 traffic deaths and 491 total accidents were recorded, with weather and alcohol listed as major factors. A Waterstown South Dakota crash killed a father, mother, and three children en route to Minnesota for Christmas.
