Secretary of State Dean Rusk pressed Saigon factions to shelve personal and minor issues to unite against Red guerrillas. The United States backed Ambassador Taylor after a civilian leadership purge and warned against interference by any group as essential to winning the Viet Cong fight.
The Town Crier noted a Christmas card that bypassed a stamp using a Christmas seal. Winchester Postmaster Wilbur Johnston reports locally mailed cards bearing a four cent stamp on the front and a five cent Christmas stamp on the back. The Commonwealth magazine profiles James R. Wilkins as Shenandoah Blossom Festival president and lists festival officers for 1965.
Three Cubans identified as anti-C Castro exile group officials were charged with taking part in a December bazooka attack on the United Nations building. They reportedly aimed to miss the 38 story East River tower to grab headlines during Ernesto Guevara’s UN address. The trio were booked in Queens after the World missile fired.
Postmaster Wilbur Johnston said Saturday service will be limited to rural carriers with no city delivery or window service. The Associated Press reports ongoing torrential rains across California Oregon Idaho and Nevada for the third day causing evacuations in multiple towns. Six dead three rescuers missing and over 5000 displaced as rivers flood. Disaster declarations issued in California Oregon and Nevada with National Guard mobilized.
Igor Ivanov, 34, freed on 100000 bail pending appeal after being convicted of conspiring to transmit U S Air Force secrets to the Soviet Union. He joins John W Butenko, sentenced to 30 years, in awaiting appeal in Newark federal court. The bail was secured by a letter from Soviet Ambassador Anatoly F Dobrynin.
Indications mount that Lt. Gen. Nguyen Khanh plans an anti American campaign in Saigon possibly involving street demonstrations against U S Ambassador Maxwell D Taylor. Khanh, now the strongest figure, criticized Taylor and signaled Vietnam could proceed without foreign aid if needed. The State Department warned against improper interference as civilian control debates continued after a purge of the High National Council. The split between Khanh and Taylor has flared amid ongoing Southeast Asia tensions.
Seaman Larry Wallace Mc Kean 21 of Winchester was killed when the car he rode in struck a tree near Wahiawa Oahu. He enlisted September 27 1963 and served as a communications technician. He graduated Handley High School June 1963. He is survived by his parents sister and grandparents with funeral arrangements pending.
President Johnson hosts Cabinet members and aides at the LBJ Ranch as he reviews department budgets with Budget Director Kermit Gordon. McNamara reports a budget near 49 billion, approving funds for a massive new airlifter, and names Gen. McConnell to succeed LeMay as Air Force chief.
