Snow and sleet cut travel across the South paralyzing airports and highways. Memphis area roads iced over with up to 12 inches in Mississippi. Police report stranded motorists and a taxi service organized to move emergency personnel to hospitals.
A postal worker removed a parcel from a Winchester post office amid a buzzing sound and feared explosion. The object was identified as an electric toothbrush. A mislaid overcoat found at the American Legion building led to a matching coat return offer. The Virginia Employment Commission will stay open until noon tomorrow, with Handley Library and War Memorial Building closing on Wednesday.

During a bond hearing for Jack Ruby a .25 caliber pistol was found in the purse of Karen Lyn Bennett a 19 year old stripper known as Little Lyn at Ruby's Carousel Club. Officers swore in witnesses including Bennett before a courtroom appearance and Ruby faced questions about pretrial precautions amid Oswald transfer controversy.
Fire and explosions forced 1,046 aboard the Greek liner Lakonia to abandon ship in the Atlantic. About 750 were pulled from the water by air and sea rescue efforts, with 296 unaccounted. US and British aircraft helped locate swimmers and lifeboats while survivors were ferried to safety.
