Sunnyside Presbyterian Church members stage The First Christmas a two performance drive in pageant on a hillside facing the church lot. About 30 costumed actors render the Nativity from Mary and Joseph to the manger scene with taped narration and Perry Como music. Afterward refreshments will be served in the church basement.
Star Priza created by Sunnyside Presbyterian men presents an outdoor Nativity story led by a star with actors moving to the stable under night skies. Couchman recalls eight years of evolving performances in Berkeley County and notes weather as the main factor in length. Last Saturday's run drew 25 carloads of spectators, with a minor hitch as the donkey refused to budge, so Mary and Joseph will walk into Bethlehem.
Congress heads home for a long Christmas weekend amid partisan battles over funding for an SST and welfare reform. A vote on SST subsidies and a 210 million compromise looms as leaders predict adjournment may push most business to 92nd Congress.
Youth Fellowship at the First United Methodist Church trimmed a Christmas tree with Chrismans monograms and symbols of Jesus. The Chrismans, made under William C. Meyers and Danville instruction, adorn the tree and were presented in a program titled The Child We Honor. Chrismans mix white and gold to signify purity and majesty, using styrofoam, pearls, mesh, sequins, fringe, beads, and wire.
Gov. Linwood Holton floated a referendum on lowering the voting age to 18 for Virginia elections. He noted two constitutional approval steps and the need to avoid dual sets of records for federal and state ballots.
The Winchester School Board votes to exercise a 60 day option at 2500 per acre for 49 acres off Middle Road across from Ward Shopping Plaza to house a new middle school for 1200 students in grades six through eight. The plan ties to annexation capital improvements and was to be recorded by board chair H. Robert Edwards Jr. with the Frederick County clerk.

Two senior Coast Guard officers, Rear Adm. William B. Ellis and Capt. Fletcher W. Brown Jr., chose retirement over court-martial for involvement in the Kudirka defection attempt. They face a congressional committee next Tuesday as the State Department and Coast Guard investigations criticize leadership. Volpe approved their retirement with punitive letters. the officers and families have faced widespread censure.
The 100th anniversary of Miss Rose Lees Hardy of Winchester was celebrated today at the Rose Lees Hardy Elementary School in Washington DC. Sen. Byrd joined 175 students in remarks on remembering past experiences and the impact of predecessors. He noted Hardy’s early life in Winchester Shenandoah Valley and her career as teacher principal and elementary education administrator. Original copies of her teaching primers and manuals were shown by former teachers who trained under her.
The warm front from the coast extends westward and moves north across Virginia by Wednesday bringing unseasonably warm temperatures. Holiday ad lines follow stating a country ham sale at Jumpin' J Ham House with prices at $1.09 per pound and a lonely at Christmas contact number.
Curtis Cradler fifty 28 and his wife Judy Ann twenty five of Berryville were in critical condition at University Hospital Baltimore after a collision eight miles north of Hagerstown on State Route 60. State Trooper Malkiewicz said both were unbelted and the crash involved a southbound car driven by Mable Cook.
