Five men perished when a span of the Big Sandy River bridge at Catlettsburg Kentucky gave way under them. Rescue crews recovered the bodies and investigations awaited.
Heavy rainfall broke records from Kentucky to Arkansas causing rivers to swell and bridges to fail. Five men missing after the Midland Atlantic bridge collapse at Catlettsburg, with ten others rescued. Three young girls drowned when their wagon bridge gave way. Pine Bluff and surrounding towns lost power as lines were toppled by winds.
A slight improvement was reported at 2 pm today in the condition of Joseph F. Massey of Winchester, ill at his home 615 South Cameron. A grocer conducting a Cameron and Monmouth streets business since last spring, he fell ill with a cold less than two weeks ago and developed anaemic poisoning, leaving his condition serious despite today’s noted progress.
Mrs Grayson learns of the death of her mother Mrs James Stewart in Keyser West Virginia. Stewart had visited Winchester often and had been ill for two years. She is survived by her husband and eight children. Mr and Mrs Grayson left for Keyser to attend the funeral.
