Barbara Jane Mackle, kidnapped and buried alive in a box near Atlanta, was released after more than 80 hours. Her parents paid a $500 000 ransom. FBI issued warrants for Gary Steve Krist and Ruth Eismann Schier, University of Miami researchers, as captors remained at large. Barbara reported she was well cared for and communicated with her family by telephone from the plane home.

Apollo 8 Escapes Earth Gravity On Historic Space Flight
Cape Kennedy reports Apollo 8 with Frank Borman James Lovell and William Anders lifting off toward the moon on a Saturn V. The crew reached earth orbit set altitude records and prepared for a 66 hour voyage to the lunar vicinity with two orbits around Earth and a planned moon insertion.
