President Roosevelt urged railway executives and unions to reach a formula under the stabilization law to prevent transportation stoppage this Christmas. He suggested a plan to potentially add time and a half for some 150,000 to 200,000 operating workers, alongside a four cent hourly wage rise previously recommended.
Naples reports widespread revolt against German forces and the puppet Italian government. Germans evacuate areas of Rome to mine and control production, with a harsh traffic ban in Rome from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Doctors ambulances and Red Cross passes allowed. A German general now controls Milan and Turin districts with death penalties for sabotage. Funerals held for Fascist officials Aldo Resega Pierre Deangeli and Primo Lamberti.
Allied reports say Fifth Army troops push through heavy snow to seize 2600 foot Mt Spinuccio amid stiff Adriatic sector fighting. Montgomery's Eighth Army advances near Ortona with Luftwaffe losses rising. air and sea actions include raids on Sofia and Elba with mixed results and several Allied aircraft losses.
Illinois city and county schools end classes early for Christmas break due to illness. Handley Elementary reported 126 absences, while Miller School counted 46 missing students. County schools will close tomorrow and reopen Monday January 3 to curb the flu and cold spread.
Paris papers claim Nazi secret police warrants signed by Himmler were offered as rewards for tips to arrest and detain French terrorists. Guerrilla bands allegedly used the warrants in anti collaborationist actions and siege lines near Lyon targeted Legion Militia units. President Roosevelt sent a Christmas and New Year message to war veterans in government hospitals. He expressed gratitude for their service and urged fortitude for the hard struggle ahead, wishing happiness for them and their families. Brigadier General Frank T. Hines attached his own veterans affairs message.
Thirty five men carrying induction orders from the Frederick County Draft Board left by bus for the Roanoke Induction Station. Eight volunteers and three transferees join Sgt. FP I Woolfe and others from Romney West Virginia Harrisonburg Lexington.
Clyde B. Collins a 52 year old resident of Siler Va died this morning at the National Fruit Product Company plant while serving in the canning department. He collapsed at the conveyor belt and was pronounced dead by Dr J Edward Harris who cited natural causes likely a heart attack.
London dispatch reports the Polish Air Force, the third largest in Britain, poised to split from the RAF and operate as an autonomous fighting arm in a future invasion of Europe. Under Air Vice Marshal Mateusz Szycki, the force has grown to over 12,000, with Spitfires, night fighters, Wellington bombers, and P-51 led aircraft based in Britain.
A combined American and RAF air command launched long range raids on Bangkok on December 19 targeting docks and an arsenal. The communique notes earlier strikes from Akyab to Henzada, with oil installation hits at Chauk and Yenangguang on December 15 and ongoing attacks on rail and river traffic.

Secretary of the Navy Knox said Japan appears to be evacuating the southern Bougainville sector to mass forces in the north. He noted unusable air fields due to U S bombing and said evacuation proceeds by land and coastal barges as Marines shift cleanup to Army General Griswold.

The German DNB agency reports Vice Admiral Ludwig Von Reuter died in London at age 75 from heart disease. He had ordered the scuttling of the German fleet at Scapa Flow in 1919.
In Kansas City on December 21 Judge John Caskie Collet sentenced Dahne W. Winebrenner of Galloway Ohio and Cornelius G. Loose a Wright Field suspended civilian employee to two years in prison for conspiracy to defraud the government in war contracts totaling about 17 million dollars. Each also received a fine of ten thousand dollars.
A fire started in the projection room of the Clarco Theatre in Berryville Virginia last night. The blaze caused no serious damage to the theatre and authorities continue to investigate the incident.
