Local Officers Seize Two Stills In Clarke and Berryville Raids
Clarke County Sheriff Luther Pannett led a raid on a Marlboro area barn in Frederick County capturing two 60 gallon stills eight gallons of apple brandy and several barrels of cider. Three men Raymond Bly Edward Mitchell and James Keeler were arrested on charges of manufacturing ardent spirits and released on $500 bond for a December 26 hearing. In Clarke County near Berry’s Ferry Rolley Elsen was arrested operating a 30 gallon still at full blast with significant mash present. He faces illegal liquor manufacture charges and has a prior jail term for liquor possession.

Delaney Purcell, about 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Purcell of Brucetown, died suddenly near Baltimore this morning. Cause not yet known. Family members have gone to Baltimore. funeral arrangements await relatives' return. He had worked there for some time and is survived by his parents and two brothers Ward and Clark, the eldest son.
