Twenty five extra employes, mostly veterans, assist Winchester post office to manage a record Christmas mail flow. Daily mail volume may hit 125000 pieces as peak nears, with 176000 pieces processed in seven days ending Dec 10.
Sydney December 19 Australian foreign minister Evatt proposed a peace writing meeting of all Allied nations to draft Germany peace. He blamed power politics for blocking the German issue at London talks and urged a voting-free conference of nations who won the war. Evatt urged broader assembly influence to counter Big Four veto power and criticized exclusive negotiations among major powers. A serious but not irreparable setback to the conference was noted.
The Virginia Woolen Co. will close Tuesday evening for Christmas with work resuming Monday December 29. Clearbrook Woolen Co. will shut for Christmas week with New Year’s Day as a workday. O Sullivan Rubber Co. closes Christmas Day and next Friday with New Year weekend off. Winchester Knitting Mill ends Wednesday noon and resumes Friday morning.
Senator Knowland urges a full Senate investigation into U S plans for Japan after obtaining a confidential document labeled PEC 230. He claims it outlines Far Eastern Commission duties and American proposals to break up Japanese industries that he calls contrary to American standards and decency.
The Agriculture department reports this year’s pig crop at 84,138,000 head, about one percent higher than last year.
W Brent Brill 51 a former Winchester taxi operator was found dead at his 119 Be James St home with a bullet wound. The house was locked from inside and a 45 automatic lay on his body. Coroner Dr J A Troxell ordered a 3:30 pm inquest Monday. Brill, WWI veteran and former Friendship Fire Co member, left notes about burial and planned to re enter taxi work after year start. He leaves a sister in Washington. funeral Sunday at Jones Funeral Home Mt Hebron cemetery.
Berryville Fire Co officers were elected last night led by Chief Robert Shenk. Other officers include Ammie Levi as captain and Roy O. Locke as secretary treasurer with a slate of lieutenants and assistants named for various posts.
The Moses Commission urges a two percent sales tax plus local increases to fund Virginia’s 1948-50 school program. It calls for state ownership of transport, higher local aid, boosted teacher pay, expanded retirement, and a $125,000 sick leave fund. One dissenter favors financing from the general fund if the tax plan fails.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Richardson of 942 Orchard Ave. is awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. The citation, signed by Secretary of Defense James Forrestal, notes heroism as aircrewman of a Torpedo Squadron 19 torpedo plane aboard the U S S Lexington during the Battle of Leyte Gulf on October 25, 1944. Local florists anticipate a record demand for Christmas flowers with poinsettias as the best seller and some roses and red carnations in demand. Prices for poinsettias are steady at about one dollar per bloom as peak holiday demand is forecast for Monday and Tuesday.
Mrs Julia E Emmart of Strasburg charged with pistol slaying of her husband George Allen art a Strasburg druggist has been ordered committed to Southwestern State Hospital at Marion for observation to assess her mental condition. Judge Elliott Marshall issued the order after testimony from Drs Blalock Pettis. The case is set for February hearing.
A correction states the New Hi Way Market at 1210 Valley Ave was inadvertently omitted from the Progressive Foods advertisement in the Star yesterday. The ad lists the market under the proper Progressive Foods Stores.
Secretary of State Marshall returned from London and met with President Truman and the cabinet to report on the collapse of the Big Four foreign ministers conference. Truman welcomed him at National Airport and urged rest after the London mission failure.
The Senate struck from a foreign aid bill a prohibition on dismantling German industrial plants and shipping them to Russia. Senate action prompted by concerns over Paris Conference reparations, with Vandenberg promising a full inquiry. The measure allocates emergency foreign aid funds, including $18 million for China, though many items remain for consideration.
Virginia agricultural extension service advises placing a freshly felled Christmas tree in plain water to reduce fire risk. Cut the trunk diagonally, insert immediately into a water-filled container, and keep the cut end submerged to preserve needles and minimize hazard.
The House and Senate authorize Secretary of Agriculture Anderson to publish public names of commodity market speculators. In Paris the anti Communist minority of the CGT voted to split from the parent federation. The delegates, representing about 1.25 million workers of CGT's 6 million adherents, said the break frees the French union movement from political control.
Washington December 19 The Civil Service Commission announced A Biedler, Heltzel Dwight W Brunk and Rene L Wenger have applied for the Harrisonburg Virginia postmastership.
BLACKSBURG, Dec. 19 The farmer in 1948 will get almost but not quite as much money for his products as he did this year. Dr. Thomas B. Hutchinson, Virginia Tech dean of Agriculture predicted today. He forecast a continued high level of prices for machinery, seed, fertilizer and labor. He advised stock raisers that since low quality animals of all kinds are selling relatively high 1948, like 1947, probably will be one of the best periods we have ever had for culling animals. It will be a year for the farmer to emphasize quality rather than quantity. As long as prices continue high, farmers should reduce their debts as much as possible and guard against purchases on a long term payment basis. He cited farmers who went heavily in debt buying new land after World War I and found when mood came that they often could not sell both their old and new acreages far enough to pay the debt on the new land alone. Hutcheson said scarcity of fertilizers particularly nitrogenous fertilizers probably will continue as one of the most serious farm problems in 1948 and said that, in view of heavy exports, farmers very likely will have no more fertilizer for next spring than they did this year. Go Heavy on Oats Since the grain shortage is likely to remain acute at least until the 1948 corn crop is harvested, it probably will pay Virginia farmers next spring to feed larger and somewhat better fertilized oat acreages which will be harvested before the shortage is over. He said the combination next year of a good corn crop and a good wheat crop would likely make available an abundance of grain at reasonable prices, even in the face of heavy exports.
President Truman urged swift action on a 17 billion dollar European recovery program over 4.25 years with an initial 6.8 billion dollar first 15 months. He framed it as essential to defend freedom against totalitarian pressures and to finish the Marshall Plan work already begun. He warned of partisan opposition and linked the effort to securing peace and prosperity for free nations.
