Enzelsfeld Austria Dec 18 The Duke of Windsor ends voluntary seclusion to pose for 17 cameramen in the courtyard of Eugene de Rothschild's castle. He appears fatigued and asks photographers how they want him to pose. A 23 mile dash to Vienna follows as cameras race for shots.
MR WINCHESTER notes a brisk holiday rush as streets fill with shoppers eager for early gifts. Post office staff urge earlier mailing to ease year end delays and ensure deliveries before Christmas.
Major S Porter House of 24 West Piccadilly Street reached 611 consecutive weekly Rotary meetings, dating from April 21, 1925. Winchester Rotary Club members praise his loyalty, noting this may be the best Virginia record and perhaps nationwide. House began attending in 1923 after a two-year miss schedule.
Washington December 18. First proposals for the administration's congressional program emerged after a White House conference on finances. Calls went out to reduce expenditures and possibly modify the tax on undistributed corporation profits. Speaker Bankhead said he urged House leaders to cut appropriations and that the President supported easing the corporate levy for debt ridden firms.
Local wonderment grows as Old Santa reportedly uses an airplane to reach Winchester. He is planned to appear next Thursday evening at the courthouse square tree before continuing to areas around the city and county. The Christmas tree is prepared and ready for tomorrow, with W. C. Hodge having secured a large tree for the display.
Postmaster W Nelson Page says the Winchester post office is on track to set a yearly records for mail. Early indications point to higher holiday volume than last year as Christmas mail increases though exact figures are not yet available.
The Board of Directors declares a semi annual dividend of two percent payable to stockholders January 1, 1937. Checks will be mailed. The Commercial and Savings Bank, John I. Sloat, Cashier.
City Fruit Market at 1 S Main advertises Xmas trees from California and Georgia pine wreaths and holly with natural berries plus mistletoe. Phone 415.
BUENOS AIRES Dec 18 A Brazilian declaration that any outside aggression against any American republic would be considered an unfriendly act electrified an Inter American Peace Conference committee. The move supported by the Central American declaration and the consultative pact approved at plenary sessions.
Gray haired Martin Sullivan a 65 year old Duquesne patrolman confessed to killing five people three of them women in revenge over alleged mistreatment of a 12 year old girl. District attorney Andrew T Park said Sullivan boasted of stalking from house to house firing from his service revolver and never denied the killings. Victims named include Laura Bacon Mary Vukelja Milan Vukelja Joseph Benda and Helen Benda. Sullivan claimed he was framed and planned to square accounts after Mrs Vukelja prosecuted him on alleged false charges. He was jailed after a hearing on mistreatment charges and briefly stopped at his home enroute to jail.
The Chamber of Commerce displays a loving cup to be awarded to the merchant with the most attractively decorated store. The prize ceremony, set for Christmas Eve, will also reveal winners from the Festival of Lights lighting contest. Over a dozen homes have entered as the city zones its four areas. Entry is free and can be made by notifying Tom Baldridge or Andrew Bell at the chamber office.

A local display near the Post Office offers pottery glass wood silver copper and linens as gifts for Christmas and weddings. Elmer V Hodges advertises this selection featuring a variety of crafts and decorative items.
8S R Evans International Service Chairman of the Rotary Club of Winchester England sends Christmas greetings to the Winchester Virginia club. The letter dated December 7 1936 was read at a luncheon and recalls Mayor Ander son's recent visit to England.
John Hamilton was voted a $25,000 annual salary as full time RNC chairman. The committee backed him after rejecting his resignation. He planned a nationwide tour to rebuild Republican strength and fight a large deficit with a special offensive against government.
Two brothers held by Martinsburg authorities face theft and harboring charges tied to a White Hall store robbery. William Barrett is accused of auto theft and recovery showed candy and gum missing from Mrs. Jennie McKee’s shop. David Barrett, under a 9 year federal parole, is charged with aiding and harboring a fugitive.

Nevada reports of bright lights fuel speculation as searchers extend the missing Western Air Express airliner hunt from Salt Lake City toward Alpine and Milford. About 25 planes join the effort with clues from Tybo and Tonopah fueling hope on the 180 mile Utah Nevada corridor.
Federal grand jurors reported no sufficient evidence to indict anyone in the June Robles kidnapping case. In other items President Roosevelt plans a cabinet discussion on unemployment checks and will address Congress in person. Local reports include three deaths in Highland Illinois from an unclear accident and other court and security actions across the nation.
In Athens the Greek government ordered the arrest of leaders in an alleged Communist conspiracy involving about 1,000 people. Officials said the plot was uncovered during a seizure of seditious documents.
Washington December 18 Senator M M Neely of West Virginia urged enactment of new legislation regulating the bituminous coal industry main goals. A man shot a Black man to death in an incident surrounding the same story.
Insurgents launched a northern assault toward Madrid aiming to breach the capital defenses. Government forces reported gains on Las Nieves Hill southwest of Toledo and prep with trenches as anticipation of a larger infantry push grew.
The residence of Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Cole at 699 Woodland Avenue was robbed recently. Thieves gained entry by unlocking a rear door and a number of articles were taken though the total loss was not disclosed.
Local stage stars will perform at the Capitol Theatre tomorrow morning for a toy matinee sponsored by the Fellowship Club. Admission is a new or used toy in good condition, staple foods, or clothing, benefiting Winchester and Frederick County families on the club master list. Bobby Munson of Hagerstown was noted for his singing and dancing.
