Death of Capt. J C Ritter at 51 shocks Winchester
Police Captain Joseph C Ritter aged 51 died suddenly yesterday of an apparent heart attack at the home of his son in Winchester. He served 29 years on the force praised as a problem solver and public relations asset. Former Chief J Thomas Boyd called his death a great loss to the department and state. He was born March 29 1917 and joined the Winchester Police Force in 1938. Continued on Page 2.

A strong earthquake waking residents of south central Alaska lasted about a minute near Anchorage. Initial reports said no major damage though burglar alarms rang and stock swayed at groceries.
