Bank Says Agreement To Start Strip Mining Not Yet Final
GREEN SPRINGS AP A Detroit bank has agreed in principle to lend Virginia Vermiculite Inc. $1 million to begin strip mining on a 460 acre tract in Green Springs. The Nov 21 pledge is not final, with covenants attached. Interior Secretary Cecil Andrus designated the area a National Historic Landmark and accepted preservation easements on about half of the 14 000 acres to shape development and protect historic qualities. The move could deter mining plans while preserving the landmark heritage.
