Wasp saves soybean crops with Indian beetle hunter
A tiny stingless wasp from Bangalore called Pediobius foveolatus helps Maryland farmers fight the Mexican bean beetle on the Delmarva Peninsula. Used since 4 years ago, the wasp lowers beetle larvae, reducing chemical use and protecting an $85 million soybean crop across 34 sites in 12 Maryland counties and Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Entomologist Dr. Allen L. Steinhauer leads the program, aiming to expand classical biological control to other regions. The project relies on annual releases since the wasp cannot survive Maryland winters.

Virginia Gov Mills Godwin Opposes Racial Quotas in Higher Ed
Governor Godwin reaffirmed Virginia’s opposition to racial quotas and timetables for desegregation in state colleges. He argued HEW threats to cut about 40 million in federal funds are improper and unnecessary, noting Virginia’s progress from 1969 to 1976 with a 237 percent rise in minority enrollment without quotas.
