The Addis Ababa radio claimed the rebel government opposing Emperor Haile Selassie has been overthrown. Haile Selassie indicated he would fight for his throne and blamed rebels. Reports from Voice of Ethiopia and other stations offered conflicting updates on the city’s status and loyalist forces.
Grover C Carter of the F and M Lunch on N Cameron St distributes Christmas dinners to children who pick up tickets. The event offers candy canes and turkeys to youngsters in need, with tickets requested soon.
President-elect John F Kennedy named Robert F Kennedy as attorney general and Douglas Dillon as secretary of the Treasury. Byron White was named deputy attorney general and Harry Anslinger will stay on as narcotics chief. Dillon, a Republican, previously served as ambassador to France and remains a key pick in Kennedy’s early administration.
Detroit AP report quotes John A. Hannah chair of the U S Civil Rights Commission and president of Michigan State University. He says the hardest civil rights problem lies in large Northern cities where discrimination is swept under the rug or moved to the suburbs. He expects progress once more than half demand action after two days of Detroit hearings on race and civil rights issues.

Clem Johnson, president of the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce, will speak at the 43rd annual dinner of the Winchester Frederick County Chamber of Commerce on January 19 at the George Washington Hotel. Philip N. Hunter will preside and pass office to incoming president E. R. Huntsberry Jr. Johnson is a former U S Chamber president and Roanoke businessman with ties to trucking and highways.
