Memorial plan aims to honor Congressman Howard Smith in Alexandria
Rep. Joel Broyhill proposes forming a nonprofit to convert the Lloyd House on Washington Street into a Smith museum and library. The plan would preserve the 18th century site as a living memorial with offices for Smith and a repository for papers and memorabilia. Funding would come from Hoge Foundation and other sources, with federal help possible. Alexandria long linked to Smith’s district and political legacy.
