Jail Break From Winchester Prison By Three Dry Law Violators
Three prisoners escaped from the Winchester jail by sawing four iron window guards and using a blanket as a rope to climb the wall. They were Corbit Purtlebaugh, Burton Hoover, and Clarence Butler, all held for liquor related offenses. A waiting car reportedly carried them away after exit through the yard. Sheriff Pannett described the escape timing and noted fresh saw blades and a saw frame found in the cell.

Special to The Star. Mrs Margaret Shepherd Goodrich wife of Robert Goodrich of Boyce Clarke county died at 345 Saturday afternoon at age 76 after years of ill health. Funeral held at Boyce Methodist Church South at 11 am with Rev R L Moore in charge. Interment in Greenhill Cemetery Berryville. She born August 25 1855 lived in Clarke county and known for her flowers. Survived by husband three daughters Esten Clark Mrs Charles Ramey and Louie Goodrich a son Clinton Goodrich a brother Robert Pyle and five grandchildren.

Five Sand Carrier Cars Jump Track Near Gore
Five boxcars loaded with sand from Virginia Glass Sand Corp. derailed on the Winchester and Wardensville line near Pingleys filling station in Gore County. About 140000 pounds of sand per car were moved after engineers expected a break on the grade. A Gainesboro wrecking crew worked all night to reposition cars, with three still on the rails by Sunday.

Mrs. Maria Burwell Carter Anderson died suddenly December 12 at her Berkeley home, widow of George Barksdale Anderson, who died hunting 35 years ago. Survived by two brothers Mann Page Carter and Shirley Carter, two daughters Louise Anderson Patten of Berkeley and Gwynn Page Whipple of Riverside, and two grandchildren. Poultry dealer killed in hit and run on Valley Pike
