Draft Act Extensions Urged by Stimson amid War Policies

Secretary of War Stimson urged the House Military Committee to approve broad draft act extensions to create a large pool of men for potential needs. Winchester men volunteer to aid air defense defense company formed

In Stephens City a watch bulletin is posted as 74 Winchester men sign to form a semi military defense company or serve as fire wardens and air raid wardens. J G Fosbrink at Woods Mill Road air raid post urged 24 hour observation and civilian participation. A Stephens City meeting discussed duties and membership rules with plans to consult Mayor Anderson.

Community urged to buy defense stamps and bonds

Mr Winchester encourages savings as students and families support the war effort. Helen Kaknis receives a Treasury letter thanking her for purchasing United States Savings Bonds, totaling 900 dollars. Hable's Palace Christmas Party Planned for December 24

The Hable's Palace Theatre will host its 11th annual Christmas Party for Winchester-area children on December 24. Doors open at 9 30 AM for about 3000 attendees to enjoy a color cartoon program and a Three Stooges short before staff distribute candy oranges and a toy to each child, with all items bought locally from J J Newberry.

Jacksonville reports a 5:30 to 7:15 a m blackout after Naval Intelligence warns of unidentified planes off the southeast coast. The naval air base and Army Fourth Observation Group HQ were darkened and planes warmed on runways but did not depart. Fog limited downtown visibility.

Red Cross drive set to begin for $10,000 goal

The Rev. Carl Honeycutt announced the Red Cross war aid campaign will start Monday with a deadline next Saturday evening to reach a $10,000 goal. Assisting leaders include Garland R. British Attack West of Tobruk Presses Encircled Axis

Cairo dispatch says British forces west of Tobruk attack encircled Axis troops at Gazala. New Zealand units reportedly moved west from Tobruk, disrupting Axis columns as they try to break toward Derna and Bengali. Axis losses near Gazala tallied around 3,000 with half killed.

Two Drivers Injured In Vaucluse Crash Near Stephens City

STEPHENS CITY Va Dec 13 S E Cover of Andrews NC and Alonzo Stickley of Middletown were injured when their cars collided south of here at Vaucluse. Cover remained in Winchester Memorial hospital with injuries. Stickley was examined and released to his home. Cover is son of late F T and Laura J Cover once of Browntown Warren VA whose tannery operated before the move to North Carolina. Mrs R S Trussell of Stephens City is Cover's cousin.
