A tentative 1938 city budget at a 1.20 tax rate will be presented by Herman Hable chairing the finance committee at a special council meeting Tuesday night. It shows total receipts of 288 000 down from 299 981 this year, with 18 000 from surplus.
MA Winchester notes that economic stress and scientists favor removing the habit of leaving food on the plate. Authorities say it is no longer necessary to show good breeding by wasting food. Manila dispatch reports the liner President McKinley rescued 453 passengers from the stranded luxury ship President Hoover off Formosa. 134 cabin and 319 third class travelers were taken from Hoishoto and Hayake islands, with two destroyers nearby. Tokyo reports Foreign Minister Kiki Hirota offers the profoundest apologies for the Panay sinking. He asks U S Ambassador Joseph Grew to convey regrets as officials at the navy ministry show dejection and resignations drift among aides amid Japan’s suppressed incident coverage.
The will of the late Gertrude Locke is on record in Frederick Circuit Court. It bequeaths the entire estate to her sister Lulu B. Jobe and names her as executrix without security.
