Republican candidate first on ballot in Virginia Senate race
In the December 20 special election for the 24th District seat, Republican Braxton Green of Staunton topped the ballot. He faces Democrat Frank Nolen of New Hope, seeking the seat vacated when J. Marshall Coleman became attorney general. Green, 48, an insurance executive, won the nomination over Waynesboro Mayor Louis Hausrath and Staunton businessman George Beam. Nolen, 37, an electrical engineer, defeated Alice Babe for the Democratic nomination.
