Economists note a revival in consumer spending as department stores report seven percent October gains, rural general merchandise up twelve percent, and autos up nine percent. Shoppers flood streets, Christmas purchases begin, and optimism grows that holiday trade will be the best in four to five years.

Five bodies recovered and 24 missing after early morning blaze at Hotel Kerns in Lansing Michigan. Names of identified victims include State Representative T Henry Howlett Vern Voorhees John Goodwine Charles Parker Donald Sias Isaac Wishneff James Gratrix A B Bosman Clarence Smith and others.
In a special session the Common Council tentatively approved a 1935 budget of 242 300 and a 1.35 mill levy per hundred dollars. They budgeted 1 500 to install traffic lights at intersections and approved a 1 000 for a hose tower for the fire department. An increase for welfare and schools was approved while hospital and other line items saw modest changes.

Mrs Elizabeth Shank Martin widow of Abraham Martin died near Smithsburg at 74 from pneumonia. She left 114 descendants including 15 children 11 of whom survive along with 61 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren all living in this county. She belonged to the Mennonite Church.
Winchester asks for help to bring Christmas joy to needy families. The Fellowship Club, based at the George Washington Hotel building, coordinates donations and volunteers to supply toys and essentials. Call 956 for information and avoid duplicate aid.

Dr Allan Roy Dafoe the physician behind the Dionne quintuplets arrived in Washington from Canada on his first airplane flight. A crowd gathered as Dr Dafoe was met by Dr William De Kleine Red Cross official amid questions about another Dionne birth which he dismissed as imagination.

President Roosevelt today established the Federal Prison Industries Inc authorized by Congress to study and administer the problem of prison labor. Sanford Bates, director of federal prisons, heads the organization with representatives from labor agriculture industry retailers and consumers.
Mrs Eva Heitt Chamberlain filed suit in Frederick County Circuit Court seeking partition or sale of the late William S Heitt estate with valuation and accounting actions. She asks reference to a master commissioner to appraise real and personal property, debts, and current indebtedness, plus an in kind or sold distribution among heirs.
Mark Few of Stephens City and Woodstock native was fined 10.25 dollars by Trial Justice A. J. Tavenner for destroying household property and breach of the peace while drunk. His wife said Few joined others in a drunken merry party damaging chairs, tables, and other home items. Few said he had worked for M. J. Grove Lime Company for 12 years.
Edward C. Bell a 60 year old Baptist deacon faces a lengthy indictment in Fredericksburg Virginia charged with attempting to poison his invalid wife to end his affection for her. State chemist Bealthis testified that deadly poison was found in evidence packages. Defense argues Bell’s mind is diseased and not legally accountable.
